Standard: Read With Understanding for ESL

  • Determine the purpose for reading.
  • Select reading strategies appropriate to the purpose.
  • Monitor comprehension and adjust reading strategies.
  • Analyze the information and reflect on its underlying meaning.
  • Integrate new understanding with prior knowledge to address the reading purpose.

Adults performing at this level can accomplish a variety of goals, such as…

Level 1
Beginning Literacy ESL

  • Identifying common signs using symbols and common sight words (Stop, Push, Pull, Men, etc.).
  • Reading basic personal information prompts such as name, address, and phone number in order to fill out simple applications and registration forms.
  • Recognizing a check or a money order and read amount.

Level 2
Low Beginning ESL

  • Reading a basic grocery list, words, and prices in store ads.
  • Demonstrating ability to use a yearly calendar with names of months, abbreviations, and a simple work schedule.
  • Developing and using a personal dictionary with words organized in categories such as family, community, school, and health.

Level 3
High Beginning ESL

  • Demonstrating ability to read and understand entry-level job duties.
  • Reading and understanding simple directions for assembling a toy.
  • Reading a simple paragraph and answering basic Wh-questions.

Level 4
Low Intermediate ESL

  • Reading information in food and medication labels to determine appropriate use.    
  • Previewing and making predictions about a simple story or letter and determining main idea.
  • Reading housing rental ads, to compare housing options and make a decision about which house is better for the family.

Level 5
High Intermediate ESL

  • Reading a health or parenting brochure in order to make decisions about changes in lifestyle.
  • Reading a college catalog to determine program characteristics and requirements.
  • Identifying the main idea and supporting details in a short newspaper story.

Level 6
Advanced ESL

  • Reading information about financial aid for higher education to decide whether or not to apply for loans, and if applying for aid, to understand options available.
  • Reading a brochure on workplace emergency procedures or use of work equipment in order to determine appropriate action.
  • Reading a popular magazine article on childhood bullying in order to get ideas about how to cope with bullying behavior in a neighbor’s child.
