Learner Commitment/Motivation Activity

"Crossing the Line"

Bring your orientation to a dramatic close with a "confirmation step". At the end of the orientation, place a strip of tape on the floor, long enough so the entire class can line up beside it.

Give every student a sheet of paper and a marker. Ask students to spend 5 minutes quietly reviewing their learning and the information they received during orientation. Ask them to formulate a powerful statement of value for themselves, related to their education. Some examples :

  • "I will attend class every day and be on time"
  • "I will study outside of class for 20 minutes each day"
  • "I will do something every day toward reaching my goal"

Ask students to write their statements on their sheets and to line up along the tape. Then ask them to take turns reading their statements aloud, with power and enthusiasm. As they finish, ask them to step over the line.
