New Beginnings
Creating and Establishing an Adult Literacy Program
New Beginnings: Creating
and Establishing an Adult Literacy Program was
created to assist literacy groups, school districts, community-based,
and faith-based organizations in the process of beginning an adult
literacy program in their community. This compact resource was
developed for groups who have never experienced the process of
starting a nonprofit organization and have little or no background
knowledge of adult literacy, adult basic or secondary education,
English as a Second Language, or GED Preparation. The goal of this
project was to provide the vital information and guidance needed,
without overwhelming the reader with in-depth training tools or
details that may or may not be helpful in the beginning stages
of a literacy program. The recommended resources listed at the
end of each chapter will provide the reader with a wealth of in-depth
training topics and resource books, curriculum ideas, and websites
to go to for specific needs.
Project VITAL was
very fortunate in accessing a vast amount of knowledge and experience
provided by numerous contributing authors, each of whom is well respected
in adult literacy or nonprofit management, in Texas and beyond. They
quickly grasped the concept of this guide and the importance of their
contribution, as well as the need for succinct and timeless information,
strategies, and resources to share with new adult education programs.
A special thanks
is extended to the twelve members of HOPE Literacy, Inc. of Tarrant
County, Texas for identifying the necessary components for this book
and serving as a review committee for the final document. Their combined
experience and knowledge of adult literacy and ESL programming was
invaluable during the development process.
