In Training for Adult Literacy
Volunteers
In Training for Adult Literacy (Project VITAL) was located
within the Center for Initiatives in Education at Southwest Texas
State University in San Marcos, Texas. Initiated in July of 1994,
Project VITAL provided professional development opportunities for
volunteer adult literacy tutors and program administrators at the
state-wide, regional, and local level until June of 2002. Training
activities for tutors and teachers included instructional strategies,
student orientation, goal-setting, recruitment, and retention, as
well as curriculum development. They were designed specifically to
meet the needs of the local program's students, teachers, and tutors.
Project VITAL also offered training in the administrative areas of
board and fund development, volunteer recruitment and retention,
as well as program design, coordination, and management, focusing
on expansion of local capacity. Project VITAL maintained a website
with a database of adult literacy programs in Texas, an on-line survey
for volunteers and program managers of adult literacy programs, and
pages for additional professional development resources, funding
sources, and curriculum development. In addition, an annual statewide
conference for volunteers was offered in conjunction with the Texas
Association of Literacy and Adult Education (TALAE).
