ESOL Orientation

Summary of Welcome Letter

1. You will learn faster IF you speak English outside of class.

2. Only you can CHOOSE to do this.


1. There are five levels of instruction.

2. Your ability level places you in class.

3. A standardized test determines your ability level.

4. Level promotion is determined by:

a. teacher judgement of class performance

b. a standardized test


1. Each year is divided into three semesters of about 12 weeks each.

2. Orientation comes before every semester.

3. Attendance is required for the entire week of orientation.

4. Seventy-five percent attendance is required each month.

5. State and federal law require good attendance and progress.


1. The purpose of orientation is to help you decide if you have the time and desire to attend English classes.

2. An honest and considered decision on your part is most important!
