Procedures for Completing Can Stress Make You Quit School?

- 1) Read the first paragraph and make certain that students realize that stress is unavoidable, that it is a necessary part of all living systems response to the environment. Provide examples. Point out that problems arise when we have too much stress and/or we do not manage it properly.
- 2) Read over the management techniques with the group, stopping to discuss and provide examples. Have students provide examples.
- 3) Place the students in triads. Have them discuss ways they personally manage stress by answering the questions.
- 4) Have them individually develop strategies for dealing with the stress of acquiring a new language.

- 1) Read the definition of stress.
- 2) Relate the box called "stressors" to school.
- 3) Read over the directions for completing the Stress Test with the group.
- 4) Have the students complete individually and score.
- 5) Discuss scores with the class and what particular stressors the students identify.
- 6) Write on the board the three most common for the class.
- 7) Discuss strategies to manage.

- 1) Have each student choose one stressor he or she could change.
- 2) Have them look at the advantages and disadvantages of the behavior.
- 3) Have them consider some solutions and the consequences to those solutions.
- 4) Have them choose one solution that would alleviate stress in their lives.
