Procedures for Completing "What Is an Attitude?"

Page 1

1) Read aloud the first paragraph. Discuss. Have students provide examples. Relate "attitude" to learning English.

2) Draw a picture on the board to illustrate story. Read second paragraph. Discuss.

3) Read the list of 10 elements that may determine a person's attitude, stopping to discuss, provide examples, have students provide examples.

4) Complete reading. Pair the students or place in triads to discuss the ten elements and determine how each one might shape their attitude toward their experience in class.

1) Focusing on number 10 of the previous list of elements, read it aloud with class.

2) Briefly go over the 12 questions and possible responses to help the students determine if they have the power to make a change in their lives. Provide examples. Once the student understands the questions and responses, let them answer by themselves. Don't discuss responses at this time. You will return to this page later.

1) Read over the "traps" and help students identify by example.

2) Have the students choose one or two excuses that have prevented them in the past from taking action. Then, rewrite with a changed, positive attitude.

1) Place the students in triads and have them read paragraph. Have them discuss. Share responses with class.

Page 5

1) Return to the responses on page 2. Have the students revisit their responses and determine individually whether any of their responses could be a barrier to their learning English.

2) Have them complete page 5 as per directions. Provide any necessary examples.
