Master Teacher Institute

Audience: Teachers of Adult and ESL Programs

Activity Overview:

  • The Master Teacher Institute is designed to give literacy practitioners who have been nominated by their directors an opportunity to engage in professional development that is conducted by nationally known experts in language literacy and learning;
  • Participants will be able to get involved in discussions around key issues in the field;
  • Hear about the latest research in the field and get a chance to apply what they have learned to various contexts; and
  • Participants will have the chance to try out technology guided by helpful and knowledgeable facilitators.

Objectives:

  • New ideas for teaching;
  • Learn about some recent resources available (photography, CD-ROM, web/internet, video/DVD, printing);
  • Receive exJune 3, 2008 used with their students;
  • Become a part of a community of teachers interested in ideas as well as practical applications; and
  • Reflection and action research will form an integral part of the institute which is directly applicable to the Credential Model.

Instructional Activities:

  • General Sessions
    • Teaching strategies and skills
    • Teaching demonstrations
    • Readings and discussions of readings
    • Teacher reflection and action research
    • Principles of engaged teaching and effective learning
    • Error Correction, “To do, or not to do?”
    • Social identity, Motivation, and Retention
  • Technology
    • There will be a separate computer lab on-site for the teachers to use during the institute where teachers will be able to link technology with teaching and learning.
    • There will be digital cameras available for use by the participants.
    • There will be a scanner available for use by the participants.
    • Participants will be coached on how to use the AKIVA software for interactive distance education meetings between institutes.
    • English for what purposes (why do you want to learn English) and context for adult ESL
