January 4, 2011: Distance Learning Overview will be held at Del Mar West College, 485 Santa Elena Street and Airport Road, GED Building, Corpus Christi (located on extreme north side of campus). January 4-5, 2011: ESL Transitions will be held at ESC Region 2, 209 North Water St., room 3-18, Corpus Christi from rom 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Hotel is the Omni-Bayfront Tower, 900 North Shoreline Boulevard, Corpus Christi. This institute will prepare teachers to implement content-based instruction and teach key skills related to transition to work, higher education, or training. There will be a special emphasis on vocabulary development, writing with a purpose, and learning how to learn. Teachers will be expected to present a lesson using materials and strategies introduced in the institute. During a virtual follow-up session, teachers will be expected to present a Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation software lesson taught in their class. The trainer will be Dr. Heide Wrigley. January 7-8, 2011: Effective Instruction for All Adult Education Students Including Those with Special Learning Needs Institute, Session #1, will be held at 2621 W Pecan, McAllen. The trainer for this South GREAT Regional Special Learning Needs Initiative will be Ms. Jan Whisonant. Hours of instruction for day one are 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., 1 hour lunch break, 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Hours for day two are 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. One goal of the “Effective Instruction for All Adult Education Students Including Those with Special Learning Needs” training is to assist adult education staff to understand and recognize the needs of all adult learners, including those who have learning disabilities and other special learning needs. A second goal is to identify and use effective instructional practices with all learners and apply appropriate accommodations so that adult learners who have special learning needs can maximize their potential and reach their goals. This training aims to improve student retention, increase performance measures, and teach participants how to assist any student who struggles to learn. Other topics include the Payne Learning Needs Inventory and ten minute interviews. Participants will have full-class discussion and also will participate in small-group projects. Participants will have some homework, including readings and reporting on personal progress toward meeting goal objectives(s). Maximum number of participants is 25. January 13-14, 2011: Mini-Institute for SWTJC ABE Teachers of English Language Learners will be held at the Matthews Student Union on the campus of Southwest Texas Junior College in Uvalde. The trainer will be Ms. Patricia de Hesus. Hours of instruction are 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. each day (6 hrs pd, with 1 hr lunch). Topics for this training include: English Language Learner Adult Students, Culture and ELL classrooms from the Perspective of the Learner and the Teacher, ESL Content Standards in Texas Adult Education, Initial and Ongoing Assessment, and Formal and Informal Assessment. This training may also address specific techniques and methodologies, including: Total Physical Response, Language Experience Approach, Oral Language Development, and Introduction to Grammar Levels. January 28-29, 2011: Project-based Learning Institute will be held at La Posada in Laredo. The trainer will be Dr. Heide Wrigley and Mr. Jim Powrie. Hours for this training are 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. both days. This institute will prepare ESL teachers to use project-based learning to engage their students in meaningful activities focused on real-world tasks. Instructors will introduce teacher-directed mini-projects with their classes before they facilitate implementation of learner generated projects. The workshop will include a hands-on technology component. Teachers will be expected to present the class projects during a virtual session. The trainer for this South GREAT Regional Special Learning Needs Initiative will be Ms. Jan Whisonant. Hours of instruction for day one are 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., 1 hour lunch break, 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Hours for day two are 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. One goal of the “Effective Instruction for All Adult Education Students Including Those with Special Learning Needs” training is to assist adult education staff to understand and recognize the needs of all adult learners, including those who have learning disabilities and other special learning needs. A second goal is to identify and use effective instructional practices with all learners and apply appropriate accommodations so that adult learners who have special learning needs can maximize their potential and reach their goals. This training aims to improve student retention, increase performance measures, and teach participants how to assist any student who struggles to learn. Other topics include the Payne Learning Needs Inventory and ten minute interviews. Participants will have full-class discussion and also will participate in small-group projects. Participants will have some homework, including readings and reporting on personal progress toward meeting goal objectives(s). February 25-26, 2011: Workforce ESL will be held in McAllen. This workshop will prepare teachers to teach the language and literacy skills students need to communicate effectively in different workplace settings. Teachers will receive original materials such as scenarios and lesson plans to use with their students. Teachers will learn how to create and illustrate their own scenarios based on challenging situations their learners might encounter. The trainer will be Dr. Heide Wrigley. May 6 & 7, 2011: Statewide Math Transitions Conference will be held at the Hilton Austin Airport, 9515 Hotel Dr., Austin 78719. Hours are 7:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. on day one and 8 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. on day two. To make reservations, call 800-584-5091. There is no registration fee for this conference. Lunch is included for conference registrants both days. Pre-registration is required. Conference registration deadline is 5:00 p.m. on Friday, April 22, 2011. The conference is limited to the first 150 registrants. First-come, first served. No on-site registration. Participants need to make their own hotel reservations and travel arrangements. November 11-12, 2011: Contextualized ESOL for Transition to Work and Training Academy will be held in Uvalde. The location is the Matthews Student Center on the SWTJC campus, 2401 Garner Field Road, in Uvalde.  Hours of instruction are 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. both days.  The trainers are Dr. Heide Wrigley and Mr. Jim Powrie. This Academy will include a description of different pathway models that link adult ESOL with technical training (I-BEST and others) and will demonstrate strategies for improving comprehension of common technical materials (charts and graphs, multi-step instructions, navigating a textbook). Multimedia will be used to demonstrate innovative ways of building both listening and reading comprehension within a context that reflects work or training situations. The Academy will use multimedia in face-to-face session as well as asynchronously with introductory and support media.
