February 4, 2012: ESL Content Standards training will be held at Del Mar College in Corpus Christi. The address is 485 Airport at Santa Elena, Corpus Christi, Texas. The hours are from 8:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. This training is for new teachers. This session will be held in the GED® computer lab, PB 1301B. Parking is free at this site. The trainer is Mr. Barry Johnson. There will be instruction on the framework of the Texas Adult Education Content Standards for ESL Learners and helpful lessons and resources for application to the various ESL levels. February 11, 2012: ESOL Reading for Transition Academy Follow-Up Session #1 will be held online. Hours are 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. This is a follow-up to the face-to-face session entitled ESOL Reading for Transition Academy that was held at Del Mar College in Corpus Christi on January 6-7, 2012. Participants who attend all face-to-face and virtual sessions and who produce a final project are eligible to apply for a stipend. February 18, 2012: Contextualized ESOL for Transition to Work and Training Academy Virtual Follow-up Session #2 will be held online. Hours of instruction are 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. In order to participate, you will need a telephone and all of the handoutsthat you will be sent prior to the session. To participate fully, you will need tojoin a web meeting where you can see Dr. Wrigley talking and also view the handouts as they are displayed on the computer screen. Please plan to test the computer that you will be using on Saturday, February 18, to join the webmeeting. Here are the directions: Step 1) Click on this link or copy and paste it to your web browser to open the web site: http://connect.its.txstate.edu/centralgreat Step 2) Click on “Enter as a Guest”, type in your first and last name, and click the “Enter Room” button. Step 3) Verify that you can see your name in the Attendee List which is on the left side of the screen. The trainers are Dr. Heide Wrigley and Mr. Jim Powrie. This Academy includes a description of different pathway models that link adult ESOL with technical training (I-BEST and others) and will demonstrate strategies for improving comprehension of common technical materials (charts and graphs, multi-step instructions, navigating a textbook). Multimedia will be used to demonstrate innovative ways of building both listening and reading comprehension within a context that reflects work or training situations. The Academy will use multimedia in face-to-face session as well as asynchronously with introductory and support media. Participants who attend all face-to-face and virtual sessions and who produce a final project are eligible to apply for a stipend. April 27 & 28, 2012: Texas Adult Education Mathematics Conference will be held at the Hilton Austin Airport, 9515 Hotel Dr., Austin 78719. This is an intense two-day conference designed to equip adult educators who teach math with the necessary tools, knowledge, and math skills to help their students successfully progress from basic math to GED math to college-level math. The presenters are master trainers for transition math with the Texas Adult Education Mathematics Institute (TAEMI), who have identified the necessary math skills and knowledge that students need for successful transition to the workforce or to higher education. Application deadline is April 15, 2012. Please fax all registration forms to 361-593-4263. There is no registration fee for this conference. Lunch is included for conference registrants both days. The conference is limited to the first 150 registrants. First-come, first served. Participants need to make their own hotel reservations and travel arrangements. January 6-7, 2012: ESOL Reading for Transition Academy will be held at Del Mar College in Corpus Christi. The address is 485 Airport at Santa Elena, Corpus Christi, Texas. The training room is the portable building PB 1302 – Classroom C, (across the street from the West Campus). There is plenty of free parking at the site. Maximum number of participants is 30. The hours of instruction are 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. both days, with an hour break for lunch. Coffee/Danish will be provided in the a.m. by Del Mar AE, lunch is “on your own”. The trainers are Dr. Heide Wrigley and Mr. Jim Powrie. This ESOL Reading Transition Academy will present a coherent approach that builds on recent research in reading comprehension and vocabulary acquisition while at the same time including more conventional reading skills development activities. The Academy will serve as a bridge between life skills reading emphasized at low ESL levels and existing ESL readers designed for higher level and for GED preparation. Virtual follow-up sessions associated with this training will be held on February 11, 2012 and March 25, 2012.
