16-17, 2008: GED Academy:
Writing - - Session 3: Assessing Students’ Writing. Teachers
who participate in this session will be able to: develop an appropriate
writing prompt that can be used to assess students’ writing at
the entry level; analyze the writing samples provided by their students
and identify errors in grammar, usage, and sentence structure; and develop
an individualized plan to assist students in systematically improving
their writing. This session
will be held on Friday from 4:30 pm -7:30 pm and on Saturday from 8:30
am - 3:30 pm at the Socorro Community Learning Center on 313 S. Rio Vista
Rd., El Paso. This is the last of three workshops (remaining

June 17 - 18, 2008: ESL Reading Academy -Explore a variety of hands-on strategies designed to improve your beginning and intermediate level ESL student's ability to read with comprehension. Try some of these research-based strategies out in your classroom and develop a customized reading strategy that works for your students. Share your experience in implementing new reading strategies with other practitioners and learn from them as well. Come join the fun! June 24 - 25 , 2008: Classroom Management Institute: Multilevel ESL Instruction - This workshop will model effective multilevel lesson planning and grouping strategies based on Texas' new ESL Content Standards. At the end of the workshop, teachers will be asked to develop and implement their own multilevel lesson plan in their classrooms. July 28 - August 1, 2008: Workforce Literacy Institute I: PreTransition-to-College Skills - This institute is designed to teach specific strategies and content that will help advanced ESL and GED students develop postsecondary writing and reading skills. This series of five (5) sessions will focus on: informational/process paragraph writing and reading, integrating grammar and language skills, and using a variety of career exploration and college culture reading material. Participants will practice teaching the strategy and then develop lesson plan content that can be used in their current classes. Training sessions will begin at 10:00 a.m. and end at 3:00 p.m. on all days and will be held at EPCC Literacy Program Center, 9050 Viscount, Building B. There is one follow up session scheduled for this academy: Sept. 26. Registration for this Academy is by invitation or requires prior approval from the GREAT Center. August 5 - 6, 2008: Workforce Literacy Institute II: ESL for Work -Come learn about using the ESL curriculum for health, customer service, and manufacturing as a stand alone class or as a way to enrich your traditional beginning-intermediate level ESL instruction. Try out surefire strategies to bring this wonderful curriculum to life in your classroom. Don't miss an opportunity to be ahead of the curve in adult education's increased emphasis on preparing our adult students for the workforce. Training sessions will be from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Region XIX, 6611 Boeing, Classroom. There is one follow up session scheduled for this academy: Sept. 12.

January 18, 2008: Texas Adult Education Credential PDPW, Session 1: This workshop is the first step in initiating the Texas Adult Education Credential processs and is required to be eligible for the Credential. The session will be held on Friday from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. This is the first of two sessions (second session February 8). Participation in both sessions is required for credit of completion of the full workshop. The training location is yet to be determined and will be announced a week prior to the training dates to all those registered. Session 3: This Academy is targeted to new teachers in the Adult Education field. The
facilitator will provide resources to lesson plans, classroom activities,
and brainstorming sessions that will assist the attendees in exploring
new methods to address classroom needs. A mentoring component is
included in the Academy that will connect an experienced teacher with
a novice. This session will be held on Saturday from 8:30
am - 3:30 pm at the El Paso Community College - Valle Verde Campus. The
room number will be forwarded to all registrants prior to the training

25-26, 2008: EL Civics
Academy II: Living in the US – From Civics
to Citizenship, Session 1. This Academy shows teachers how to
use PowerPoint® lessons
to teach basic content related to U. S. culture, American democratic
values, as well as U. S. History and Government. Presenters will
demonstrate how visual information can be used to illustrate events,
ideas, key vocabulary, and teach basic conversation skills. While
the course includes ideas for preparing students for the citizenship
test, the ideas presented will be applicable for both civics classes
and other content-based instruction. This
session will be held on Friday from 4:30 pm -7:30 pm and on Saturday
from 8:30 am - 3:30 pm at the Socorro Community Learning Center on 313
S. Rio Vista Rd., El Paso. This is the first of three workshops
(remaining sessions February 22-23 and April 11-12). Participation
in all three sessions and a follow up activity is required in order to

Focus on Reading and Math - - Session 1.
The Struggling Reader: From Decoding Words to Understanding Text: This
first session will focus on strategies that teachers can use to help
students: determine their purpose for reading a given text; identify
and use appropriate reading strategies; improve their overall reading
rate and fluency levels; and use their own knowledge and experiences
to help gain understanding of new information. This session will
be held on Friday from 4:30 pm -7:30 pm and on Saturday from 8:30 am
- 3:30 pm at the Socorro Community Learning Center on 313 S. Rio Vista
Rd., El Paso. This is the first of three workshops (remaining
sessions February 15-16 and March 14-15). Participation in all
three sessions and a follow up activity is required in order to qualify

and Processes: This second session will focus on strategies that teachers
can use to help students: master the basics of number operations using
whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and percents; recognize and use equivalencies
among fractions, decimals, and percents; recognize and correctly apply
a wide range of mathematical symbols; and identify and use the basics
of measurement and geometry. This session will be held on Friday from

second session will focus on strategies that teachers can use to help students:
use the basic rules of grammar; construct simple and compound sentences;
write a well-constructed paragraph with a main idea and supporting details
about a familiar topic or situation they encounter in real life; and use
writing for communication through a variety of formats including letters,
emails, reports, directions, etc. This session will be held on Friday from
4:30 pm -7:30 pm and on Saturday from 8:30 am - 3:30 pm at the Socorro
Community Learning Center on 313 S. Rio Vista Rd., El Paso. This
is the second of three workshops (remaining session May 16-17 and follow
up on May 23).
