June 8, 2013: New Teacher Academy XI, Session 4 of 4: (TARGET AUDIENCE: Individuals who have less than 3 years of experience in Adult Education) Training will be facilitated by Barbara Baird. June 21, 2013: Distance Learning Training: (Target Audience: Administrators and teachers to be involved with Distance Learning) Training will be facilitated by Barbara Shull. This is a session designed to prepare participants to take the six-week DL 101 course offered online by Project Ideal. During this session teachers sign up for and are assigned a special discussion group with Project Ideal in order to start posting their reflections and comments about the different aspects of Distance Learning: recruitment, orientation, teaching at a distance, assessment, and administrative issues in DL. July 17, 2013: GED® Math and Writing Institute: (Target Audience: GED® Instructors)
Training will be facilitated by Reda Berry, Tristyn Davis, Joni Vara, and Theresa Sands. This institute will include a full-day math session and a full-day writing session. To maximize capacity, the sessions will be repeated. To qualify for the training stipend, instructors must: 1. attend a math and a writing session; 2. complete all required follow up assignments; and 3. attend the follow up session scheduled for August 2. August 9, 2013: Credential: Reflection Writing Workshop: (Target Audience: Instructors currently seeking their Credential) Staff from the Adult Education Teacher Credential will work with teachers who are actively pursuing their Credential. Participants will write reflections about their staff development and training experiences and submit them for peer review within the group of attendees. Once the reflections are reviewed, they will be posted into CredITS for scoring. The purpose of this session is to assist and encourage teachers to dedicate uninterrupted time in their efforts to complete the requirements for the Credential. September 5, 2013: USCIS Teaching Civics and Citizenship to Immigrants.The workshop is a FREE seminar for ESL, Civics, Citizenship, GED®, Adult Basic Educators and Program Administrators. The seminar is hosted by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). You will learn about:
- The naturalization test
- The naturalization process
- How to prepare students for the naturalization interview and test
These seminars are designed to enhance the skills needed to teach U.S. history, civics, and the naturalization process to immigrant students.

January 12, 2013: Introduction to Adult Education 101: (Target Audience: All Adult Education Instructors) Training will be facilitated by Barbara Baird. Gone are the days when students would complete a paper worksheet and then turn it in in the wire box on the teacher’s desk. In today’s world, students are creating digital PBL projects using a variety of tools on computers and mobile devices. In this session, the presenter will demonstrate her favorite apps and tools for students, and then will share a simple solution that will allow the teacher to collect and organize the students' creations. The session will be held on Friday from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Far West GREAT Training Center, 313 S. Rio Vista Rd., El Paso, TX. April 20, 2013: New Teacher Academy XI, Session 1 of 4: (TARGET AUDIENCE: Individuals who have less than 3 years of experience in Adult Education) Training will be facilitated by Barbara Baird. The academy is targeted to new teachers in the Adult Education field. The facilitator will provide resources to lesson plans, classroom activities, and brainstorming sessions that will assist the attendees in exploring new methods to address classroom needs. A mentoring component is included in the academy that will connect an experienced teacher with a novice. As part of the mentoring component, the mentee shall evaluate his/her own teaching methods and explore new delivery based on the information presented in the academy's sessions. May 3-4, 2013: General PD Trilogy Session 1: Learning-to-Achieve Training: (Target Audience: All Adult Education Instructors) Training will be facilitated by Stacey Milberger. Learning-to-Achieve (L-t-A) is designed to build state capacity to increase the achievement of students with learning disabilities. It addresses core concepts and special topics, such as English language learners and LD. L-t-A is designed to help adult education professional developers, teachers, and other human service partners understand learning disabilities in adults, including instruction techniques and how to actively support adults with LD in educational and workplace settings. Training will focus on the following modules:
- Module 1 Definition of Learning Disabilities: Discuss differences in the definitions of learning disabilities and the consequences for adults with LD.
- Module 2 Self-determination: Consider ways in which service providers can support adults with LD in developing self-determination to achieve their goal.
- Module 4 Explicit Instruction for Strategy Learning: Learn the principles of explicit instruction and how to assist adults with LD learn academic content.
This workshop is the first session in our PD Trilogy. In an effort to meet local program needs and provide more access to staff development activities we are offering a series of four different training sessions of 9 or 6 hours each. The sessions will take place on Friday evenings and Saturdays or stand-alone Saturday sessions. Each weekend will have a different trainer and subject matter. Participants may choose to attend all sessions or just one - or two. You must register for each session you want to attend. Participants who attend two or more sessions (minimum 12 hours) and a follow-up will be eligible to receive a stipend. The training will be held on Friday from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn El Paso Airport, 6650 Gateway East Blvd., El Paso, TX. May 11, 2013: General PD Trilogy Session 2: Career Awareness and Writing for ESL/Low ABE: (Target Audience: All Adult Education Instructors) Training will be facilitated by Dr. Glenda Rose. The training will include two modules:
- ICA for Beginning ESL - This is a look at lessons out of the ICA Guide adapted for literacy and beginning level ESL students. After reviewing the "hows and whys" of the adaptations and experiencing them, participants will choose a lesson to adapt and have time to prepare at least one lesson from the ICA Guide original. Additional resources will be shared with participants.
- Write from the Start - This session is a combination of theory and practice for getting new writers writing. It includes a host of established activities as well as addressing special situations such as pre-literate, non-literate and semi-literate students.

In an effort to meet local program needs and provide more access to staff development activities we are offering a series of four different training sessions of 9 or 6 hours each. - Algebra Word Problems - The participants will review the steps for problem solving and investigate some of the strategies for solving algebra word problems.
- Write from the Start - The participants in this hands-on workshop will learn tools to help students visualize algebra. Participants will learn how to see and build algebraic concepts and equations using 3 dimensional materials.
