February 3-4, 2012: : ESL PD Trilogy: Energizing the Classroom, Session 1 of 3: (TARGET AUDIENCE: ESL Instructors) Training will be facilitated by Veronica Castaneda. Theater is more than performance on a stage. Its effectiveness as a teaching tool and therapeutic value is demonstrated in classrooms everywhere. However, it can feel intimidating to teachers as well as students. In this session, you will learn how to painlessly integrate theater games in a lesson as well as ease students in participating. The session will include games that are fun, engaging, and easily adaptable to different ESL proficiency levels.
This workshop is the first session in our PD Trilogy. In an effort to meet local program needs and provide more access to staff development activities we are offering a series of three different training session of 9 hours each. The sessions will take place on Friday evenings and Saturdays. Each weekend will have a different trainer and subject matter. Participants may choose to attend all session or just one - or two. You must register for each session you want to attend. Participants who attend two or more sessions (minimum 18 hours) and a follow-up will be eligible to receive a stipend. The session will be held on Friday from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Far West GREAT Training Center, 313 S. Rio Vista Rd., El Paso, TX. February 11, 2012: New Teacher Academy VIII, Session 3 of 4: (TARGET AUDIENCE: Individuals who have less than 3 years of experience in Adult Education) Training will be facilitated by Barbara Baird. This is the third of four 1-day workshops (Remaining workshop: April 21, 2012). Attendees must participate in all four sessions for the successful completion of the academy and to be eligible for the training stipend. February 17-18, 2012: : General PD Trilogy: Transitions: BASIC Strategies for College and Career Success, Session 2 of 3: (TARGET AUDIENCE: ABE and ASE Instructors) Training will be facilitated by Barbara Baird. This workshop addresses the increasing demand for adult basic education programs to prepare students for transitioning into college and/or career training programs. Regardless of their level, students can become proficient at mastering effective academic strategies that they can apply in their future "next steps". When taught and practiced in our classrooms the BASIC strategies discussed in this workshop can become academic habits that students can transfer to new learning situations and contexts.

March 9-10, 2012: General PD Trilogy: Learning to Achieve, Session 3 of 3: (TARGET AUDIENCE: All Instructors) Training will be facilitated by Stacey Milberger. Self-f-determination is a particularly important concept for students with/without learning disabilities. During this session, we will discuss how self-determination can be developed in educational settings. Planning for the future, being proactive, and reflecting/readjusting will enable individuals to overcome challenges, assume greater responsibility for their actions and control over their lives.

March 30-31, 2012: ESL PD Trilogy: Beginning Literacy/Low Level ESL, Session 3 of 3: (TARGET AUDIENCE: ESL Instructors) Training will be facilitated by Rosa Hidalgo and Arturo Muro. This training will provide Beginning Literacy ESL Instructors with a variety of tools and strategies to succeed. This training is appropriate and designed for both new teachers and experienced teachers that may want to energize their classroom. During this training we will explore the needs of the student, develop lessons that correlate with the Texas Standards and Benchmarks, and discuss assessments such as the BEST Plus. Trainers will provide activities to improve student learning and performance in the classroom. These fun and innovative activities will promote classroom unity and give teachers and students the opportunity to use authentic materials.

January 2, 2012: Goal Setting: Developing a Culture for Transitions: (Exclusively for YCLC Instructors) Training will be facilitated by Irene Ramos. During this training, participants will focus on understanding how student transitions relate to the development of goal setting within adult education. With an emphasis on goal setting best practices, participants will receive resources to overcome barriers, set SMART goals, navigate the Goal-Driven Learning Toolkit, and utilize student scenarios. January 4, 2012: Building a Community of Excellence: (TARGET AUDIENCE: Instructors at Socorro Community Learning Center) Training will be facilitated by Aliana Apodaca. For an organization to be effective and reach upper levels of excellence, a high level of communication and commitment is needed. This full day program will explore strategies to achieve this. January 20, 2012: 24 Months and Counting - Gearing Up for the Future: (TARGET AUDIENCE: Program Managers and Administrators) Training will be facilitated by Bonnie Gooner and Susan Pittman. This special two-hour session is designed to provide local program managers and administrators with the most up-to-date information possible on the next generation GED® assessment. During this session, participants will focus on the content of the test and the impact the increased rigor of the test will have not only on GED® preparation programs, but also Adult Basic Education and English Language Learner instruction. Participants will also discuss the need for increased technology within the instructional program in order to ensure that students are prepared for a computer-based assessment. This session will not focus on the logistics of administering the next generation GED® assessment, but rather on the content and its impact on instruction and students performance. January 20-21, 2012: GED® Academy I: 24 Months and Counting - Preparing for the Future, but Focusing on the Here and Now, Session 1 of 3: (TARGET AUDIENCE: ABE and ASE Instructors) Training will be facilitated by Bonnie Gooner and Susan Pittman. This first session will take a two-pronged approach. First, this session will provide participants with information about the next generation GED® assessment and where programs will need to head over the next two years It will include:
- information on the standards to which the assessment is currently being developed,
- changes in rigor of the assessment and how that will impact students, and
- how classrooms will need to adapt their instructional strategies and classroom materials in order to meet those challenges.
Keeping mind that change is coming, participants also need to stay grounded in the here and now. Who are the students they are currently serving, what are their immediate needs, what will most assist those students in being successful on the current GED® test, and into the future? The second part of the session will address the challenges that students are having passing the current GED® test and what teachers can do to address those challenges.

January 27-28, 2012: General PD Trilogy: Critical Thinking Skills for GED Algebra & Geometry, Session 1 of 3: (TARGET AUDIENCE: ABE and ASE Instructors) Training will be facilitated by Cecilia Hines and Fanny Bernal. The workshop will provide GED® Math Instructors with a variety of algebra and geometry activities that activate prior knowledge, and encourage hands-on participation, critical-thinking and cooperative learning. With this workshop, we hope to provide GED® teachers with the tools they need to make teaching algebra and geometry enjoyable, meaningful and productive, while at the same time providing students with the mathematical skills they need to pass the math portion of the GED® Test.
