Effective Multi-Level Strategies for ABE/ASE (GED) Learners

Description: This interactive training focuses on appropriate lesson planning strategies, group strategies, and effective multi-level activities. It includes theory and strategies to use in teaching all subjects of the GED to a multi-level class. Classroom management techniques, test preparation, orientation procedures, multi-sensory lesson planning, and proficiency objectives of the Texas Content standards will be presented. Modules are sequential, but can be presented in three separate trainings. It is recommended that the training be conducted on two separate days: Day One three hours (Module One) and Day Two six hours (Modules Two and Three).

Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course an instructor will be able to:

  1. Use resources and references for quality multi-sensory lessons on all five subjects of the GED
  2. Prepare students adequately with substantive content techniques for success on the GED examination.
  3. Demonstrate classroom management skills for the multi-level GED class.
  4. Plan lessons for the multi-level GED class.
  5. Use effectively a range of learner-centered activities
  6. Describe the characteristics of a multi-level class.
  7. Illustrate factors to consider when planning for multi-level classes.
  8. Modify sample lesson appropriate to multi-level classes.
  9. Differentiate among the use of pairs, small groups, multiple groups, and large groups for effective learning.
  10. Practice activities applicable to multi-level classes.

Effective Ways to Use Authentic Materials in the Classroom

Description: This professional development course is designed to show teachers how to utilize authentic materials in the classroom. Participants will learn ways to introduce students to the culture that surrounds them and to help them navigate through it in this interactive and activity filled session.

Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Administer a series of needs assessments to help students identify areas of most interest to them.
  2. Generate student awareness of the culture around them by using newspapers, conducting an online job search, reading brochures, discussing doctor visits, and introducing services available at the library.
  3. Increase student knowledge about online shopping, nutrition, and health.
  4. Create a lesson plan based on using authentic materials in the classroom.

EL Civics Curriculum/Content Standards

Description: The purpose of this PD training session is to provide strategies for developing and modeling developed lessons using the ESL Content Standards. The development shows how the Content Standards are the primary focus for planning ESL lessons. In addition to the base planning, EL Civics is integrated into the lessons to meet grant requirements.

  1. Present ESL/EL Civics lessons following the Content Standards.
  2. Develop ESL/EL Civics lessons using resources provided.

EL Civics Institute: More Learning – Less Teaching in EL Civics

Description: This workshop is presented by Heide Spruck-Wrigley and will focus on teaching and learning that helps learners talk about themselves and communicate with others inside and outside of the classroom; building basic civic knowledge; and using visual information (Chalk Talk; photographs, PowerPoints) to build vocabulary as well as listening and speaking skills. In this two-day institute and follow up sessions, teachers will bridge the gap between research and practice and will identify those instructional strategies that yield more “bang for the buck.” A hands-on demonstration will include the use of digital storytelling for EL Civics. Participants will receive instructional materials to try out in their classes. The Institute is provided through collaboration with the South GREAT Center.  Participants must have approval of their Program Director to attend and must preregister.

Outcomes: Upon completion of this training session, participant will be able to:

  1. Try out an activity or strategy from the training and make it work in the classroom.
  2. Participate on a listserv facilitated by Heide Wrigley and talk about what happened in the classroom as a result of the activity or strategy implemented.
  3. Introduce ideas and materials (including cameras) in the classroom that lend themselves to conversations and discussion among students that lead to pair and small group interactions inside and outside of the classroom.

Engaging the ESL Learner in Reading

Description: This interactive PD session will consist of three 3-hour sessions and will use “The Practitioner Toolkit: Working with Adult English Language Learners” that was developed by the National Center for Family Literacy and the Center for Applied Linguistics. This Toolkit provides needed support and serves as a resource to adult education and family literacy instructors who are new to serving English language learner adults and families. The Toolkit provides a variety of materials to help practitioners begin to meet the language and literacy development needs of the English Language Learner.

  2. Develop an orientation program for new students.

Evaluating ESL Lessons

Description:The workshop will examine key elements of planning and teaching which contribute to a successful ESL lesson. Participants will discuss the merits of a video-recorded lesson. They will also look at ways in which teachers can incorporate consolidation, review and student assessment elements into series of lessons.

Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this training, the participants will be able to:

  1. Participants will learn how to evaluate ESL lesson aims and outcomes.
  2. Participants will learn how to assess ESL classroom management and language teaching techniques.
  3. Participants will learn how to evaluate the overall effectiveness of individual ESL lessons.
  4. Participants will learn how to assist teachers to plan series of lessons which consolidate and review previously taught items, and which evaluate students’ knowledge of these items.
