Effective Multi-Level Strategies for ABE/ASE (GED) Learners

Description: This interactive training focuses on appropriate lesson planning strategies, group strategies, and effective multi-level activities. It includes theory and strategies to use in teaching all subjects of the GED to a multi-level class. Classroom management techniques, test preparation, orientation procedures, multi-sensory lesson planning, and proficiency objectives of the Texas Content standards will be presented. Modules are sequential, but can be presented in three separate trainings. Recommended to conduct trainings in two separate days: Day 1- Module 1 (3 hrs.) and Day 2 – Modules 2 and 3 (6 hrs.). Module 6 of 6: Adult Educator Academy (possible option).

Objectives: Upon completion, course participants will (be able to):

  1. Use resources and references for quality multi-sensory lessons on all five subjects of the GED
  2. Prepare students adequately with substantive content techniques for success on the GED examination.
  3. Demonstrate classroom management skills for the multi-level ABE/ASE class.
  4. Plan lessons for the multi-level ABE/ASE class.
  5. Illustrate factors to consider when planning for multi-level classes.
  6. Modify sample lesson appropriate to multi-level classes.
  7. Differentiate among the use of pairs, small groups, multiple groups, and large groups for effective learning.

Effective Record Keeping

Description: This training introduces participants to techniques and strategies that will assist them in maintaining accurate, detailed, complete and effective records. Through the use of program forms and logs, participants will learn and understand effective record management and have the opportunity to practice through various activities, including creating electronic files to save important files and logs.

Objectives: Upon completion, course participants will (be able to):

  1. Identify and apply strategies learned for managing important data,
  2. Utilize the techniques given to see the importance and relationships of data gathered, and
  3. Become familiar with the different tables, forms and logs used in Adult Education programs.

Effective Ways to Use Authentic Materials in the Classroom

Description: This professional development course is designed to show teachers how to utilize authentic materials in the classroom. Participants will learn ways to introduce students to the culture that surrounds them and to help them navigate through it in this interactive and activity filled session.

Objectives: Upon completion, course participants will (be able to):

  1. Administer a series of needs assessments to help students identify areas of most interest to them.
  2. Generate student awareness of the culture around them by using newspapers, conducting an online job search, reading brochures, discussing doctor visits, and introducing services available at the library.
  3. Increase student knowledge about online shopping, nutrition, and health.
  4. Create a lesson plan based on using authentic materials in the classroom.

EL Civics Curriculum/Content Standards

Description: The purpose of this PD training session is to provide strategies for developing and modeling developed lessons using the ESOL Content Standards. The development shows how the Content Standards are the primary focus for planning ESOL lessons. In addition to the base planning, EL Civics is integrated into the lessons to meet grant requirements.

Objectives: Upon completion, course participants will (be able to):

  1. Present ESOL/EL Civics lessons following the Content Standards.
  2. Develop ESOL/EL Civics lessons using resources provided.
  3. Integrate the Content Standards into an ESOL/EL Civics Curriculum

ESOL Strategies

Description: Training addresses strategies that provide listening, speaking, reading and writing lessons in all levels of ESL as well as in the single multi-level classroom. References, resources and techniques will be identified.

  1. Identify and use successful strategies and techniques for teaching the ESL student at all levels of literacy and in the multi-level class.
  2. Demonstrate effective use of a variety of multi-sensory techniques and strategies to instruct ESL students in acquisition of the English language.

ESOL: Reading and Writing

Description: This interactive PD session will provide teachers with skills and activities to integrate reading and writing skills into their classroom instruction. The teachers will examine various approaches for developing reading and writing skills together, particularly with emergent readers and writers

Objectives: Upon completion, course participants will (be able to):

  1. Describe various purposes for reading and writing.
  2. Distinguish between top-down and bottom-up approaches to literacy development.
  3. Practice the processes used in the Language Experience Approach.
  4. Develop a reading lesson that includes pre-reading, reading, and follow-up activities.
  5. Create a writing activity that is form-focused.
  6. List factors used to decide when and how to correct learner errors in writing.

Evaluating ESOL Lessons

Description:The workshop will examine key elements of planning and teaching which contribute to a successful ESL lesson. Participants will discuss the merits of a video-recorded lesson. They will also look at ways in which teachers can incorporate consolidation, review and student assessment elements into series of lessons.

Objectives: Upon completion, course participants will (be able to):

  1. Evaluate ESOL lesson aims and outcomes.
  2. Assess ESOL classroom management and language techniques.
  3. Evaluate the overall effectiveness of individual ESOL lessons.
  4. Plan series of lessons which consolidate and review previously taught items and evaluate students’ knowledge of these items.
