ABE Track – What Students Need to Know and Be Able to Do: Enhancing Instruction in Writing will be held from 9:00 am – 12:00 noon. Presenters are Bonnie Goonen and Susan Pittman-Shetler. Writing continues to be a problem for students in adult education programs. Nationally, the average writing score for students on the essay component of the GED Language Arts, Writing Test continues to fall in the marginal category. Marginal writing limits a student’s ability to move forward to postsecondary education and training and often severely limits a student’s ability to obtain, maintain, and receive promotions in the workplace. This workshop will focus on the diverse writing skills necessary for successful entry into postsecondary education and the workplace. From formal essays to research reports to note-taking to short answers on assessment tools, postsecondary education requires many different types of writing skills. Students must be able to apply the rules of Edited American English, as well as research, invent, develop, edit, and revise written documents. Programs need to provide skills that go beyond the five-paragraph essay in order for students to successfully transition into postsecondary education and the workplace. Please use these numbers to register: ABEAC 6800174, class number 18467, and section number 5076. ABE Track – What Students Need to Know and Be Able to Do: Enhancing Instruction in Mathematics will be held from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm. Presenters are Bonnie Goonen and Susan Pittman-Shetler. In your mathematics classroom, should you teach only what is required to attain the GED or should it also prepare students for life after adult education? Where does the responsibility of adult educators begin and the responsibility of post-secondary programs begin? Should our goals include college readiness? Presenter is nationally known researcher Dr. Heide Spruck Wrigley. While STAR materials and training are available to Texas ABE teachers, no such guidance is available to teachers whose students are non-native speakers of English who are not yet fully English proficient. The ESOL RTA presents a coherent approach that builds on recent research in reading comprehension and vocabulary acquisition while at the same time including more conventional reading skills development activities.  The Academy and materials provided serve as a bridge between the life skills reading emphasized at lower ESL levels and existing ESL readers designed for higher levels and for GED preparation. Readers designed for low-literate English-speaking readers engage ESL students at intermediate levels of English proficiency and show how effective reading strategies (such as those associated with Reading Apprenticeship) can be adapted for use with ESL learners who need language and vocabulary development along with the development of reading skills.  The initial two-day session is open to all teachers. Teachers who are interested in participating in follow-up virtual sessions and learning circles to obtain more in-depth knowledge may apply to receive a stipend through an extension of this initial two-day Academy. Mentors will be provided to support teachers who participate in follow-up activities of the Academy and will receive a study circle guide and related materials to facilitate this process.  Teachers who participate in the follow-up activities will work individually or in study circles to review effective practices and prepare a lesson to be taught with their students.
