In this training participants come to understand the powerful effects that culture plays in every person's life. BaFa BaFa is a simulation activity that helps participants become personally aware of the issues surrounding cultural differences by putting them into one of two created cultures and requiring interaction with the other one. January 10, 2009: Building an Adult Reader will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at HCDE, Irvington Center, 626 Lindale, Houston, 77022. Presenter is Stacy Shultz. This course will target those instructors of reading for Adult Basic Education. Throughout the training participants will learn the six foundations of reading. (i.e. phonemic awareness, phonological awareness, decoding skill, fluency, vocabulary development, comprehension, and motivation). The participants will learn the meanings of the foundations and ways to implement their new found knowledge with activities for adult learners. Each foundation will be explored and authentic activities will be provided. Participants will leave with a knowledge of the foundations of reading and how to apply them in their direct reading instruction. This training course is for anyone interested in learning more about the Texas Adult Education Content Standards and Benchmarks (TAESB). The main objectives of the training are to familiarize the audience with the TAESB and to develop lesson plans using the standards and benchmarks. Audience members do not need to have previous knowledge of the TAESB, however, they do need to familiar with adult education programs and practices in Texas. Target audience members would include full-time and part-time adult education teachers (ABE, GED, ESL), and adult education program administrators. January 14 and 15, 2009: ESOL Reading Academy - Research-based Strategies for ESOL Reading, (Sessions I & 2) will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in Room Seminar B at HCCS – 3100 Main Street, Houston 77002. Nationally known researcher Dr. Heide Spruck Wrigley will facilitate this Institute that is designed for experienced teachers and will focus on research to practice in teaching reading to second language readers with a special focus on comprehension strategies for intermediate level learners. Participants will explore the types of learning experiences that are most likely to promote reading proficiency and will make connections between the ideas presented in the workshop and their own practice. This Professional Development opportunity is ideal for experienced teachers who are interested in becoming Master Teachers. Dr. Heide Spruck Wrigley has long-term involvement in professional development services for ESOL practitioners in Texas. The initial two-day session is open to all teachers. February 9, 2009: Using Coaching Strategies to Effectively Conduct Teacher Observations will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., at Harris County Department of Education, 6515 Irvington, Houston 77022. Presenter is Rene Coronado. The presenter will cover strategies that can be used by supervisors/administrators, instructional leaders before, during and after a teacher observation in order to help teachers improve their effectiveness. The training will emphasize the planning of lessons and increasing a teacher’s reflective thinking by using effective questioning strategies before and after a lesson (during a Coach’s conference w/the Teacher). February 14, 2009: Developing Data and Graph Literacy will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the TALAE Conference 2009, 9515 Hotel Drive, Austin 78719. Presenter is Denise Johnson. Developing Data and Graph Literacy is designed to provide teachers with basic but creative teaching techniques to assist ABE/GED students with the capacity to interpret and use data, present in a different format, solve problems, or make predictions. Teachers will be refreshed in the following subject areas: (1) understanding statistical concepts; (2) constructing, interpreting, and comparing tables, charts, and graphs of statistical data; and (3) comparing and contrasting data sets and making predictions based on probabilities. Data Detective training was developed by Texas LEARNS to provide technical assistance to Texas adult education programs. Helping programs understand how to utilize the data in TEAMS Reports to accurately and effectively assess students and to improve program performance has become a priority in the State. It is Texas LEARNS’ goal that Adult Education Program directors and staff become comfortable enough using TEAMS Report data that they will become Data Detectives. This training is divided into four sections. In each section, participants will follow along as the trainer presents material in the power point and in the handouts. At the end of each section, it is the participants turn to become Data Detectives by completing the activities. This training is intended for anyone who administers or scores the BEST Literacy Test. Participants will investigate proper test administration and scoring procedures, practice scoring writing samples, and acquire a basic knowledge of the content. By the end of the session participants should be able to use the writing rubric for scoring writing samples and follow the mandates for accurate scoring on the other sections.
