January 4, 2008: Texas Adult Education Content Standards Training will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at AAMA/Adelante 6100 Gulf Freeway Houston 77023. Presenters are: Christine Spin and Cynthia McConnell. This training course is for anyone interested in learning more about the Texas Adult Education Content Standards and Benchmarks (TAESB). This course will target those instructors of reading for Adult Basic Education. Throughout the training participants will learn the six foundations of reading. (i.e. phonemic awareness, phonological awareness, decoding skill, fluency, vocabulary development, comprehension, and motivation). Each foundation will be explored and authentic activities will be provided. Participants will leave with a knowledge of the foundations of reading and how to apply them in their direct reading instruction. January 7-8, 2008: Reading in a Language Not Your Own: Research-based Strategies for ESL Reading will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Cy-Fair College, Fairbanks Center 14955 Northwest Freeway Room 112, Houston 77040. Presenter is Heide Wrigley.This course is designed for experienced teachers who are committed to sharing their expertise with others. This workshop will focus on research to practice in teaching reading to second language readers with a special focus on comprehension strategies for intermediate level learners. The on-site class will include a demonstration lesson, research-based instructional strategies and hands-on activities accompanied by lesson plans. The workshop will include a discussion of principles of second language acquisition applied to ESL reading. Participants will explore the types of learning experiences that are most likely to promote reading proficiency and will make connections between the ideas presented in the workshop and their own practice. April 26, 2008: DL101: Implementing Distance Learning for Adult Education in Texas will be held from 9:00 a.m. to Noon, at University of Houston, Cougar Den. Presenter is John Stevenson. This training is intended for teachers who have prior approval of their Program Director or Coordinator to use Distance Education as part of their curriculum. If you are interested in attending, please request approval before registering with the Coastal Region GREAT Center. Distance education is now an option for adult education and family literacy programs in Texas. Teachers who wish to use this approach are required to participate in Distance Learning 101: Teaching Adult Learners at a Distance (DL 101). This course is itself a distance course and is designed to help teachers and administrators develop a distance education plan for an approved curriculum for their program.This first session of the course is a mandatory face-to-face orientation. November 22, 2008: BEST Plus Scoring Refresher Toolkit will be held from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm, at Lone Star College-Greenspoint, 250 N Sam Houston Pkwy E Ste 306, Houston 77060. Presenter is Bill Medina. This training is designed to recalibrate approved BEST Plus test administrators. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on their own strengths and weaknesses regarding administration and accurate scoring of the BEST Plus. Participants will practice using the scoring rubric to provide justification for scoring each of the three language aspects. After practice, participants will complete a BEST Plus scoring calibration assessment. Each participant must bring his/her own TAG (Test Administrator’s Guide) and their own Scoring Refresher Workbook. Please note: This session will be limited to 15 participants when the test will be administered as part of the training. The session will be limited to 20-25 when the test is not administered as part of the training. This training is intended for anyone who administers or scores the BEST Literacy Test. Using the manual, participants will investigate proper test administration and scoring procedures, practice scoring writing samples, and acquire a basic knowledge of the content. By the end of the session participants should be able to use the writing rubric for scoring writing samples and follow the manual mandates for accurate scoring on the other sections. December 12 & 13, 2008: ESOL Work-Based Literacy Academy (Sessions I & 2) will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in Room Seminar A at HCCS - 3100 Main Street, Houston 77002. Participants must plan to attend both sessions. Nationally known researchers Dr. Heide Wrigley and Jim Powrie will facilitate this academy where teachers learn how to use scenario-based strategies drawn from the workplace to improve their students' ESL workforce communication skills. Participants will also receive materials that focus on communication and literacy skills for work that can be integrated with and supplement instruction in the conventional ESL classroom. Teachers in the Coastal Region may apply for a stipend to participate in a Master Teacher project as part of the Academy.
