The Coastal Region GREAT Center
The Project GREAT [Getting Results Educating Adults in Texas] Adult
Education and Family Literacy Regional Centers of Excellence are Texas
LEARNS' answer to the professional development needs of Adult Education
and Family Literacy practitioners in Texas. Eight (8) Project GREAT
Centers are funded as federal State Leadership activities by the Texas
Education Agency and Texas LEARNS, one in each of eight service regions
in the state.
The Coastal Region GREAT Center provides training for, but not limited
to, Adult Basic Education (ABE), General Education Development [GED],
English as Second Language (ESL), literacy and basic skills, workforce
literacy, learning disabilities, cross-cultural communication, and
all statewide training needs as identified by Texas LEARNS.
The purpose of the Coastal GREAT Center of Excellence is to carry
out coordination activities for regional training for Adult Education
and Family Literacy Programs in collaboration with Texas LEARNS, TEA,
local Adult Education Directors, TCALL, the Texas Family Literacy Resource
Center, the Texas Adult Education Credential Project, and the Texas
Workforce Partnerships with the goal of meeting the local professional
development needs of Adult Educator and Family Literacy providers while
driven by national initiatives.
The goals of the Coastal Region GREAT Center are to:
- Coordinate regional training activities for Adult Education and
Family Literacy programs;
- Meet the local professional development needs for technical assistance,
technology assistance, and scientific-research based instruction;
- Collaborate with the local workforce development system to meet
the Adult Education professional development needs of workforce staff;
- Collaborate with Texas LEARNS and the Center for Initiatives in
Education at Texas State University to manage the regional implementation
of the Texas Adult Education Credential Model;
- Implement, in conjunction with Texas LEARNS and the other GREAT
Centers, a model for the development of master teachers that includes
a process for mentoring other teachers, and the development of action
research and project based initiatives;
Facilitate and coordinate the regional implementation of statewide
initiatives, including, but not limited to: the implementation
of Adult Education Content Standards, BEST Plus and TABE assessment
training, TEAMS training and training on the use of data for program
improvement, and training on cross-cultural communications.
In addition to the following Adult Education Co-ops, the Coastal Region
GREAT Center serves 20 Adult Education Co-op Affiliates, 8 Adult
Education for TANF Recipients Programs, 3 Corrections
Education Programs, 12 EL Civics Programs, 19 Even
Start Programs, 2 Faith-Based Literacy Programs, 6 LVA--Laubach--ProLiteracy
America Affiliates, 4 Local Literacy Councils, 1 The
First Lady Family Literacy Initiative, and 13 other
Adult Education and Family Literacy Programs.

The Project GREAT Coastal Region Center of Excellence is housed in the Transitional
Studies and Instructional Supportdivision of Lone Star College - Cy-Fair.
