This six-hour workshop is an opportunity for instructors, counselors/advisors, and administrators to learn about a career planning process that will motivate students and provide them with the tools to reach their career and educational goals. Participants will have an opportunity to explore a variety of lessons from the Integrating Career Awareness into the ABE & ESOL Classroom (ICA) curriculum guide and discuss ideas for incorporating them into their broader curriculum. May 30, 2013: Multi-level Classroom: Best Practices for Teaching Adult Learners. Presenter is Denise Johnson. This session will be held at the Federal Correctional Complex, Staff Training Center, 5430 Knauth Road, Beaumont, TX 77705 from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm. This interactive training focuses on appropriate multi-sensory lesson planning strategies, group strategies, differentiated instruction, and integration of transitional career awareness and post-secondary studies. Classroom management techniques include GED® test preparation, orientation procedures, including brief interviews, goal setting, multi-sensory lesson planning and appropriate theory and strategies to use in teaching listening, speaking, reading, writing and math to a multi-level ESOL, ABE or ASE class. This session will be held at Houston Community College, Codwell Learning Hub, 555 Community College Dr, Room 220, Houston, TX 77013 from 9:00am – 1:00pm. This training is designed to recalibrate approved BEST Plus test administrators. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on their own strengths and weaknesses regarding administration and accurate scoring of the BEST Plus. Participants will practice using the scoring rubric to provide justification for scoring each of the three language aspects. After practice, participants will complete a BEST Plus scoring calibration assessment. Each participant must bring his/her own TAG (Test Administrator’s Guide) and their own Scoring Refresher Workbook. For more information, please email CoastalCF@lonestar.edu. June 19, 2013: The Multiple Pathways Model: Using Brain Research to Orchestrate Learning. Presenter is Dr. Janet Zadina. This session will be held at Lone Star College-University Park, 20515 SH 249, West Dining Room, Houston, TX 77070 from 9:00am – 4:00pm. In this exciting presentation, infused with real brain images and interactive experiences, attendees will go beyond visual, auditory, and kinesthetic pathways and learn about additional pathways strongly involved in learning. January 4, 2013: BEST Literacy Refresher from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm at Houston Community College-Northeast Campus, Codwell Learning Hub, Room TBA, 555 Community College Dr., Houston, TX 77013. Presenter is Bill Medina. This training is a review/refresher for anyone who administers or scores the BEST Literacy Test. Using the BEST Literacy Test Manual, participants will identify, review, and practice proper test administration and scoring procedures. Activities will include scoring of reading portions, writing samples to evaluate and score, scoring writing samples, and determining the rationales for scores given. The conference is limited to the first 100 registrants, first-come, first-served. Each session will be limited to 20 people, so early sign-up is encouraged.

Five concurrent sessions will be offered with each session being presented twice giving participants the opportunity to attend two of the following five different sessions:
GED Testing Tips will be presented by Karen Greer and Vicki Angel. Participants will receive information and practical lists of skills to help their students with test taking. Hands-on activities along with ways to better construct and analyze tests.
Algebra Word Problems will be presented by Krista Young and Angie Kaldro. The participants will review the steps for problem solving and examine the types of algebra word problems that are and will be seen on the current GED exam, the future GED exam and on college placement exams. Investigation of the strategies for solving word problems will provide hands-on and discussion activities for the participants.
Elementary Algebra will be presented by Anthony Chan and Marsha HoSang. The purpose of this session is to help remove students’ fear of algebra. This session will give our teachers the tools they need to show their students that elementary algebra is in the real world and that the use of patterns helps to discover the basic principles of Algebra.
Teaching Geometry: To See It like a Mathematician will be presented by Denise Johnson and Cheryl Sanders. Geometry and Trigonometry is designed to provide teachers with creative teaching techniques to assess the characteristics of lines and geometric figures. Teachers will be refreshed in the following areas:
- Broaden Instructional Strategies as it relates to Geometry (balance, symmetry, Area, Surface Area, and Volume).
- To recognize that visual forms in the practice of math have the potential to improve the student learning.
To discuss building of the five strands of mathematical proficiency as an intervention in teaching concepts of geometry and model various activities teachers can implement in their classrooms. Identify key elements of success skills in passing the GED and vocational tests. Introduce Technology Tools for GED Math Teachers.
Peek into the GED 2014 – Geometry and Probability will be presented by Reda Berry and Manuel Navarro.
- Perimeter/Area/Volume—To have participants differentiate between area, perimeter, and volume; emphasizing the most common mistakes in these areas as identified by GEDTS and methods to increase student success. Participants will also broaden instructional strategies in solving real world and mathematical problems involving perimeter and circumference.
- Mean, median, range and mode—Average, middle, most—Which is which?—To better understand the meaning of mean, mode, median and range and give strategies on teaching these probability skills effectively to students.

Presenter is Kay Vaccaro. This training is intended for anyone who administers or scores the BEST Literacy Test. Using the manual, participants will investigate proper test administration and scoring procedures, practice scoring writing samples, and acquire a basic knowledge of the content. By the end of the session participants should be able to use the writing rubric for scoring writing samples and follow the manual mandates for accurate scoring on the other sections. Presenter is Dorothy Babbington. Research on adult learning theory has shown that a participatory approach is highly effective in motivating students and enhancing learning. The challenge, however, to the ABE/ASE/ESL teacher is the “how to” incorporate this into the classroom. This workshop will review the research behind the approach and discuss the process of implementing and monitoring learning in the classroom. Week of March 18, 2013: Distance Learning Academy Module 3: Teaching Adult Students at a Distance (DL 101) will begin during the week of March 18, 2013 with an introductory conference call. Presenter is Angela Johnson. DL 101 is a six-week online course. During the six weeks, participants will navigate and use an online course platform for DL 101 using Google Sites. Program administrators and teachers will also discuss and complete assignments regarding student recruitment, orientation, accessibility to materials and technology, teacher roles in a distance learning program, curriculum choices, assessment, and student progress/academic gains which will culminate in the completion of a Distance Learning Agency Plan. Module 3: DL 101 is the second mandatory training requirement for local program directors and teachers who are implementing a distance education program for the first time. Program directors and staff that have an existing DL program plan in place are not required to attend.
DL 101 Course Pre-requisites:
- Administrators/coordinators and teachers who are implementing distance learning for the first time are required to attend Module 1: Understanding State Policy for Distance Education before they complete Module 3.
- Participants are required to attend a one-hour conference call before the online course begins and participate in a one-hour conference call/webinar during Week 5 of the online course.

This one-day Training-the-Instructor workshop from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm at, Robert Turner High School, 4717 Bailey Road, The Teaching Theater, Pearland 77584.To use the Roots of Success curriculum, programs must have a certified Roots of Success instructor. To be certified, instructors go through a one-day Training-the-Instructor workshop where they receive all of the teaching materials they need to teach Roots of Success (Instructor’s Manual and multimedia DVD) and are licensed to teach the course. Training and certification are a one-time step; no further or continuing training is needed for instructors. Once certified, instructors can teach any and all customized versions of Roots of Success. April 15 and ends on May 24, 2013: Online Integrating Career Awareness Training Course: Session II. Trainers are Denise Johnson and Martin Loa. The purpose of this online course is to prepare teachers to implement the Integrating Career Awareness into the ABE & ESOL Classroom (ICA) Curriculum Guide with students. This is an intensive, 6-week all online training with a facilitator who provides feedback and ultimately assigns a course completion percentage. Teachers should allot 3-4 hours of work on this course weekly. Several hands-on activities will increase your level of comfort and familiarity with the curriculum guide and lessons. Participants must earn a grade of 80% or above to receive credit for having completed the course and to have professional development hours awarded in TEAMS or to become a MICAT or Key Trainer. A portion of this time will be spent implementing lessons with students. Staff who do not regularly teach, or teachers who do not currently teach classes, will need to “borrow” a class in order to implement the lessons. Up to 24 professional development hours are awarded upon 100% course completion. Participants who receive a grade of 80% or above for this online course are exempted from the Initial ICA Training, including the two required follow-up surveys and training sessions.
April 17, 2013: Cross-Cultural: BaFa BaFa - An Experiential Simulation Cross-Cultural Communication Activity. Presenter is Martin Loa. This session will be held at Literacy Advance of Houston, 2424 Wilcrest Dr, Ste 120, Conference Room, Houston, TX 77042 from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm. In this training participants come to understand the powerful effects that culture plays in every person’s life. BaFa BaFa is a simulation activity that helps participants become personally aware of the issues surrounding cultural differences by putting them into one of two created cultures and requiring interaction with the other one. The resulting misperceptions and misunderstandings become the focus for the debriefing. This session is a module of the Cross-Cultural Strand; prerequisite not required. The X Factor, Quadratic Equations XPosed will be presented by Karen Greer and Vicki Angel. This training addresses solving for X in quadratic equations and how this can be challenging for our students. Elementary Algebra will be presented by Anthony Chan and Conni Marshall. The purpose of this session is to help remove students’ fear of algebra. This session will give teachers the tools they need to show their students that elementary algebra is in the real world and that the use of patterns helps to discover the basic principles of Algebra.

GED 2014 Workplace Math will be presented by Cheryl Sanders, and Manuel Navarro. In this interactive workshop, participants will learn about math used in a variety of workplace settings, including manufacturing, health care, service industry, and construction. In addition, participants will be provided hands on activities and sample lessons that they can use immediately in the classroom that directly relate to the workplace and the 2014 GED test.
