This training will provide the CTB/McGraw-Hill certification requirements on the best practices of administering, scoring, and interpreting the TABE 9/10. June 7, 2008: Texas Adult Education Content Standards Training will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at Harris County Department of Education, Irvington Learning Center, 626 Lindale, Houston 77022. Presenter is: Melanie Mayeaux. This training course is for anyone interested in learning more about the Texas Adult Education Content Standards and Benchmarks (TAESB). The main objectives of the training are to familiarize the audience with the TAESB and to develop lesson plans using the standards and benchmarks. Audience members do not need to have previous knowledge of the TAESB, however, they do need to familiar with adult education programs and practices in Texas. Target audience members would include full-time and part-time adult education teachers (ABE, GED and ESL), and adult education program administrators. July 22, 2008: BEST Plus Training will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at the Lone Star College–Greenspoint Center, 250 N. Sam Houston Pkwy E, Room 314 Houston 77060. Presenter: Judy Bowman. The participants will study the rationale for the BEST Plus test and acquire sufficient mastery of the BEST Plus test to perform duties of a tester in administering, scoring, and interpreting the scores. NOTE: Participants are required to have a TAG manual. No one will be allowed to attend the session without a TAG manual. July 26, 2008: BEST Plus Training for Non-Testers will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Lone Star College–Greenspoint Center, 250 N. Sam Houston Pkwy E, Room 314 Houston 77060. Presenter is Jill Kaeser. This training is intended for teachers, administrators and other adult education staff involved with but not actually administering BEST Plus. The training will explore objectives, content areas and question types of the BEST Plus oral interview. Participants will experience scoring and appropriate test administration procedures. July 26, 2008: BEST Literacy will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Lone Star College–Greenspoint Center, 250 N. Sam Houston Pkwy E, Room 314 Houston 77060. Presenter is Bill Medina. This training is intended for anyone who administers or scores the BEST Literacy Test. Participants will investigate proper test administration and scoring procedures, practice scoring writing samples, and acquire a basic knowledge of the content. By the end of the session participants should be able to use the writing rubric for scoring writing samples and follow the mandates for accurate scoring on the other sections. August 2, 2008: BEST Plus Scoring Refresher Toolkit will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., at the Lone Star College–Greenspoint Center, 250 N. Sam Houston Pkwy E, Room 314 Houston 77060. Presenter is Cora Conner. This training is designed to recalibrate certified BEST Plus test administrators. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on their own strengths and weaknesses regarding administration and accurate scoring of the BEST Plus. Participants will practice using the scoring rubric to provide justification for scoring each of the three language aspects. After practice, participants will complete a BEST Plus scoring calibration assessment. Each participant must bring his/her own TAG (Test Administrator’s Guide) and their own Scoring Refresher Workbook. August 23, 2008: More from Students, Less from Teachers will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Lake Jackson Community Education Center, 120 Circle Way, Lake Jackson, Texas 77566. Presenter is Jeff Mohamed. In this session teachers will experience hands-on, interactive tasks designed to actively engage students in the learning process. The strategies presented will increase students’ interest in and retention of material learned. Originally developed for ESL teachers, this training offers strategies that can be adapted for ABE and GED students. Handouts will be given.
