February 11, 2012: New Teacher Training/Adult Educator Academy, Module 3: Multi-level Classroom: Best Practices for Teaching Adult Learners will be held from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm at Lone Star College-Greenspoint Center, Room 305, 250 N. Sam Houston Pkwy E, Houston, 77060. Presenter is Kay Vaccaro. This interactive training focuses on appropriate multi-sensory lesson planning strategies, group strategies, differentiated instruction, and integration of transitional career awareness and post-secondary studies. Classroom management techniques include GED® test preparation, orientation procedures, including brief interviews, goal setting, multi-sensory lesson planning and appropriate theory and strategies to use in teaching listening, speaking, reading, writing and math to a multi-level ESOL, ABE or ASE class. February 18, 2012: Contextualized ESOL for Transition to Work and Training Academy Virtual Session (2 of 2) will be held virtually from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm. Facilitator is Dr. Heide Spruck Wrigley. This Academy began with an initial two-day face-to-face session on December 9 and 10, 2011. Participants MUST have attended the initial two-day session and Virtual Session 1 on January 14, 2012 to attend this session. Stipend participants must attend all sessions. February 18, 2012: Setting the Stage for Achievement: Goal Driven Leaning will be held from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm at Adult Reading Center, Inc., 2246 N. Washington Ave., Pearland, 77581. Presenter is Donna Cutler. During the three hour, face-to-face workshop participants will focus on understanding the requirements of the Texas Adult Education Goal Setting Policy. Participants will also have an opportunity to engage in small group activities designed to help them understand the goal setting process for adult education students. February 20, 2012: Technology: Microsoft® Office PowerPoint® - Creating a Basic Presentation will be held from 12:30 pm – 3:30 pm at Ogden Adult Center, 2300 Victoria St., Beaumont, 77701. Presenter is Denise Johnson. This introductory course will teach participant everything they need to know to create and deliver a basic Microsoft® Office PowerPoint® 2007 presentation. Participants will learn how to create slides, put content on them, and make them look good. Participants will then learn how to prepare speaker notes and handouts and get ready to present. February 23, 2012: Coastal GREAT Advisory Committee Meeting is hosted by David Joost and Houston Community College and will be held virtually.

February 25, 2012: New Teacher Training/Adult Educator Academy, Module 4: TEAMS for Teachers will be held from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm at Lone Star College-Greenspoint Center, Room 305, 250 N. Sam Houston Pkwy E, Houston, 77060. Presenter is Bill Medina. This training provides teachers and other staff new to adult education with an overview of TEAMS, how to access it and how to utilize it to improve program performance. The session includes a thorough review of the National Reporting System, State Assessment and Goals Setting/Attainment Policy for Adult Education, and Adult Education Performance Measures. February 25, 2012: New Teacher Training/Adult Educator Academy, Module 5: Technology: Social Media and the Internet as a Medium for Learning will be held from 12:30 pm – 3:30 pm at Lone Star College-Greenspoint Center, Room 303, 250 N. Sam Houston Pkwy E, Houston, 77060. Presenter is Cynthia Shade. Recent studies from the Department of Education have shown that, on average, students in online learning conditions performed better than those receiving face-to-face instruction.  Online education is expected to expand sharply over the next few years, and due to this expansion, the use of social media and social networking is a tool that is at our fingertips as instructors.  There are clear advantages to using social media in the classroom and for distance learning. With social media services online, teachers and learners can experience new and better types of communication and interaction.  They can become more connected, feel less isolated, and stay abreast of emerging social media technologies and distance education as it continuously evolves with the trends. February 25, 2012: Credential: Texas AE – Professional Development Planning Workshop (PDPW) will be held from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm at Harris County Department of Education, Irvington Learning Center, Room 117, 626 Lindale St., Houston, 77022. Presenter is Mary Lorenz. This 6-hour workshop will provide participants with an introduction to the Texas Adult Education (AE) Credential. Before attending the workshop participants should click [here] and view the three online modules that provide an overview of the Credential and directions on how to enroll in the Credential. This workshop is the first step in initiating the Teacher Adult Education Credential process and is required to be eligible to participate in the Credential. The workshop is designed to help teachers consider new perspectives on professional development and provides tools they can adapt to put ideas into action.  Teachers will learn thoughtful and reflective practices to apply to their professional development experiences in the context of their classroom communities and their teaching styles. March 3, 2012: Credential: Texas AE - Reflective Practice and the Credential will be held from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm at Harris County Department of Education, Irvington Learning Center, Room 117, 626 Lindale Blvd., Houston, 77022. Presenter is Mary Lorenz. This 6-hour workshop will introduce teachers pursuing the Texas Adult Education (AE) Credential to the reflective writing process. The workshop provides an opportunity to jump start working towards earning your Texas AE Credential.  In this workshop, you will have access to an experienced Credential teacher who will guide you in how to write excellent reflections that will earn credit towards your Credential.  You will also network with other teachers who are working towards their Credential and form a strong group for peer support and guidance through the process. Participants must have completed enrollment in the Credential and previously completed a PDPW. Participants should come to the training prepared to write about two recent professional development experiences. March 24, 2012: Writing ABE/ASE: Developing Successful Writers – From the GED® Test Essay to College Papers, Part 2 will be held from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm at Harris County Department of Education, Irvington Learning Center, Room 211, 626 Lindale St., Houston, 77022. Presenter is Karen Couey. This course is designed to assist instructors in developing instructional strategies that will help students write a successful GED® test essay as well as prepare them for college level and business world writing. This course focuses on the following:  addressing students’ fears and anxieties about writing; preparing to succeed on a timed, written-on-demand essay; reviewing and analyzing model essays; organizing, revising and editing skills. Note: Even though primarily focused on GED® test and college essays, the writing activities presented in this training can be easily adapted to the ABE or ESOL classroom.
