All participants must register in order to attend a Coastal Region GREAT Center training session. If you do not preregister prior to noon the day before the training, you must complete a registration form at the training site.

New Teacher Academy I

Andragogy: The Art of Teaching Adults, ABEAC: 6800275--Hours:  3 hours
Description: In this training, participants will become familiar with andragogy (the art of teaching adults). In addition, participants will investigate key principles of adult learning by engaging in a discussion of how the adult learning processes differ from those of children. Participants will explore the importance of establishing a safe environment for learning that is engaging, cooperative, and productive.

Goal Setting: Developing a Culture for Transitions, ABEAC: 6800295--Hours: 6 hours
Description: During this six hour, face-to-face course, participants will focus on understanding how student transitions relate to the development of goal setting within adult education.  With an emphasis on goal setting best practices, participants will receive resources to overcome barriers, set SMART goals, navigate the Goal-Drive Learning Toolkit, and utilize student scenarios.

ICA: Integrating Career Awareness, ABEAC: 6800380--Hours: 6 hours
Description: This six-hour workshop is an opportunity for instructors, counselors/advisors, and administrators to learn about a career planning process that will motivate students and provide them with the tools to reach their career and educational goals.  Participants will have an opportunity to explore a variety of lessons from the Integrating Career Awareness into the ABE & ESOL Classroom (ICA) curriculum guide and discuss ideas for incorporating them into their broader curriculum.  Participants will receive a copy of the Integrating Career Awareness into the ABE & ESOL Classroom (ICA) curriculum guide.

Lesson Planning: How to Plan an Effective Lesson, ABEAC: 6800260--Hours: 3 hours
Description: This training is designed to help ABE/ASE/ESOL teachers focus on how to plan, develop and write effective lessons. Hands-on and interactive activities will be included. Participants will be allowed time to plan and develop a lesson plan that can be implemented in their classroom.

Multi-level Classroom:  Best Practices for Teaching Adult Learners, ABEAC: 6800154--Hours: 6 hours
Description: This interactive training focuses on appropriate multi-sensory lesson planning strategies, group strategies, differentiated instruction, and integration of transitional career awareness and post-secondary studies. Classroom management techniques include GED test preparation, orientation procedures, including brief interviews, goal setting, multi-sensory lesson planning and appropriate theory and strategies to use in teaching listening, speaking, reading, writing and math to a multi-level ESOL, ABE or ASE class. Options are available for up to three additional PD hours.

Best Plus for Non-Testers ABEAC: 6800110--Hours: 3 hours
Description: This training may be done BEFORE the BEST Plus Scoring Refresher Toolkit for review, fine-tuning, and practice; OR it may be done AFTER the BEST Plus Scoring Refresher Toolkit as remediation and practice following an unsuccessful completion of the BEST Plus Scoring Refresher Toolkit training. CAL approved test administrators will review objectives, content areas and question types of the BEST Plus oral interview, review the scoring rubric, review appropriate test administration procedures, and practice scoring the test. Each participant must bring his/her own TAG (Test Administrator’s Guide).

Description: This training provides teachers and other AE staff with an overview of TEAMS, how to access it and how to utilize it to improve program performance.  The session includes a review of the National Reporting System, State Assessment and Goals Setting/Attainment Policy for Adult Education, and Adult Education Performance Measures.  TEAMS reports such as : Participant Roster, Performance Report, Table 4 & 4b Combined, Participant Roster w/Latest Assessment and GED Match are reviewed.

TABE: Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) 9/10 Certification ABEAC: 6800036--Hours: 6 hours
This training will provide the CTB/McGraw-Hill certification requirements on the best practices of administering, scoring, and interpreting the TABE 9/10. Each participant will receive a copy of the official TABE 9/10 training video workbook, "How to Plan and Administer TABE 9/10."

Trainer is Dorothy Babbington/Shannon Castille.  This training will be held at Angelina College-Jasper Higher Education Center, 450 Bulldog Avenue, Room 109, Jasper, TX 75951 from 9:00am – 12:00pm.  This training will provide an overview of the RLA Extended Response Rubric.  It will present GED® Teachers with real-world situations where they can help test-takers demonstrate their ability to develop an argument and support their ideas with text-based evidence.  For more information, please email CoastalCF@lonestar.edu. This training will be held at Angelina College-Jasper Higher Education Center, 450 Bulldog Avenue, Room 109, Jasper, TX 75951 from 9:00am – 12:00pm.  Problem Solving Overview participants will learn the importance of using Mathematical Reasoning and effective questioning in all GED® classes and be introduced to algebraic problem solving using the SOLVE method.  In addition participants will have an opportunity to use manipulatives to solve Algebraic Problems.  For more information, please email CoastalCF@lonestar.edu. April 12, 2014: Content Standards: Implementing Texas Content Standards. Trainer is Doris Larry.  This training will be held at Houston Community College, 3100 Main St, Auditorium, Houston, TX from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.  This training course is for anyone interested in learning more about the Texas Adult Education Content Standards and Benchmarks (TAESB). The main objectives of the training are to familiarize the audience with the TAESB and to develop lesson plans using the standards and benchmarks. Audience members do not need to have previous knowledge of the TAESB; however, they do need to be familiar with adult education programs and practices in Texas. April 14, 2014 [REOPENED] ESOL: Beginning Literacy ESOL Training. Trainer is Denise Johnson.  All participants attending this training will receive a English on a Roll® Cube Set and Instructor Manual.This training will be held at Bilingual Education Institute, 6060 Richmond Ave, Ste #180, Room 205, Houston, TX 77057 from 8:00am – 2:00pm.  Beginning Literacy ESOL training provides instructors with techniques and strategies to improve the persistence and performance of learners in this lowest level of ESOL. Teachers will learn how to promote an environment that enhances persistence and builds community among learners. April 23, 2014: Learning Disabilities: Differentiated Instructional Strategies for Adult Learners. Using Career Pathways to Contextualize Instruction for Adult Learners

Summary: The participants will learn how contextual teaching enables lower-skilled adult learners to advance along a career pathway and prepare for postsecondary success.

2014 GED® Test:  Problem Solving and Critical Thinking Skills
Participants will learn strategies on teaching the interrelationships between critical thinking, problem-solving and math and how related reading and interpreting graphs, charts and other data representation are connected to Mathematics and Science.  Teachers will learn how ratios and proportions are connected to solving problems and use probability models to interpret data and determine the probability in context. Teachers will have practice with strategies and hands on activities that assist in teaching critical thinking.

HOPE Literacy, Literacy ConneXus, Tarrant Literacy Coalition, and Dallas Baptist Association will host this conference from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (check-in at 8:30) on the Dallas Baptist University campus (Patty and Bo Pilgrim Chapel, 3000 Mountain Creek Parkway in Dallas). Breakout sessions will cover Adult Basic Education, English as a Second Language, GED® test preparation, Citizenship; and other topics of interest to adult literacy providers in religiously-affiliated and other community-based settings. March 3 & 4, 2014, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.:  BEST Plus Training for Trainers presented by the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) through collaboration among Far West, Coastal, Central and South Central GREAT Centers. Individuals were selected by program directors to participate and applications are now closed. BEST Plus is an individually administered, face-to-face oral interview designed to assess the English language proficiency of adult English language learners in the United States. BEST Plus is a combined test of listening and speaking skills. As an oral assessment, BEST Plus provides a short, practical test that meets the accountability needs of programs that report to the National Reporting System (NRS). For individuals interested in becoming certified BEST Plus trainers, the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) utilizes a train-the-trainer (TOT) model that allows individuals or groups to complete a trainer certification process. Trainer is Kay Vaccaro.  The BEST Literacy Training of Trainers (TOT) provides strategies, materials and a BEST Literacy Test Training Manual to prepare BEST Literacy Test administrators to accurately administer and score the BEST Literacy Test.
