Fellowships at TCALL - Fellowship Projects & Past Recipients
The Texas Center for the Advancement of Literacy and Learning (TCALL) announces the availability of $50,000 in TCALL Fellowships for the 2008-2009 academic year. Each fellowship will consist of a one-year award, which may be used to offset the cost of travel expenses to conferences, dissertation research, and/or tuition, fees, and maintenance while a student is enrolled at Texas A&M University (TAMU). Up to two TCALL Fellowships of $25,000 each will be awarded for research on topics relevant to adult literacy. Some examples of research topic areas are:
| • adults with special learning needs |
• transitioning English Language Learners into adult basic or secondary education and from there into college or vocational programs |
| • health literacy |
• implementing distance education or other technologies in adult literacy |
| • financial literacy |
• serving youth in adult literacy (particularly court-ordered youth) |
| • economic impact of earning a GED |
• Texas Adult Education Content Standards implementation and instructional outcomes |
| • teaching in multi-level classrooms |
• impact of teacher professional development (particularly current and ongoing Texas initiatives) on adult literacy learner outcomes |
| • workplace literacy |
• performance accountability and performance measures for Texas adult education programs |
| • reading instruction with adult literacy or ESL learners |
• Even Start or other family literacy research focused on the adult education or parenting component |
| • persistence strategies for adult literacy learners |
Requirements:
The fellowships will be awarded for a one-year academic period beginning August 25, 2008 through June 30, 2009. The following requirements will apply to recipients of the TCALL Fellowships:
- Present at two conferences in the field of adult literacy (paying own travel expenses from Fellowship award).
- Work with TCALL Center Director or designated faculty mentor toward the submission of a co-authored peer-reviewed journal article.
- Be available for meetings and the possibility of conducting onsite research at the TCALL Riverside Campus location.
- Time commitment is approximately 20 hours per week during the academic year.
Eligibility: To qualify for the TCALL Fellowship you must:
- Be admitted on a full-time basis to Texas A&M University. You are not required to reside in the Bryan-College Station area, but you must be willing to make yourself available for meetings and the possibility of working onsite on existing TCALL research projects.
- Be enrolled in a doctoral program. All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply regardless of field.
- Submit a completed application (instructions appear below), including a cover sheet, curriculum vitae, letter of recommendation (preferably from a professor), and a 3-4 page proposal indicating your background and interest in adult literacy, your budgetary plans for the fellowship, and other qualifications you may have to receive this fellowship.
- Students who do not have substantial grant resources and are not employed by TCALL will be given priority. Please specify in your cover letter what financial aid or other funding you anticipate receiving for the 2007-2008 academic year.
NOTE: Final award decisions are contingent on continued funding of the TCALL Fellows as part of TCALL’s Clearinghouse Project grant for the program year beginning July 1, 2008.
