KET Math Basic Series

This series of 15 videotapes and the associated workbooks present real-life math as adults use it at home and on the job. The topics include: basic operations; weights and measurement; decimals and percents; reading graphs and tables; rounding and estimating; and other essential math skills. This series is checked out by individual tapes. Call for list of titles.

KET Learn to Read Series

This series of 30 videotapes and accompanying workbooks is designed for adults who can't read. Each videotape includes: sight words used to help students construct meaningful sentences; segments to motivate the student; a lesson about signs students are likely to encounter in daily life; short handwriting improvement segments to help students work on psychomotor skills; a "Practice Makes Perfect" segment to assist students in phrasing so they can begin to feel the flow of the language; and humorous skits, testimonials, and survival tips.

This series offers adults hands-on opportunities to practice skills taught. It starts with fundamentals of the alphabet, builds on previous lessons to add new letters and sounds to the students' base of knowledge and offers review and refresher lessons. While the series emphasizes basic phonics principles, the programs use a variety of instructional approaches. Reading and writing exercises are part of each lesson, as are sight words. The workbook is printed as newspaper supplements in order to project an adult image for adult new readers. This series is checked out in sets of 5 videos.

PRE-GED Reading: Another Page Series

This series of 16 videotapes and accompanying five workbooks delivers practical instruction in reading comprehension using a whole language approach. It is designed for adults with reading and comprehension skills that fall between the 5th and 8th grade levels. Its general goals are: to increase reading vocabulary; to raise reading comprehension levels; and to enhance self-confidence and motivation to read. These programs cover: reading for facts; finding the main idea; finding an unstated main idea; making inferences; using sources of information; understanding forms; recognizing fact and opinion; and using context clues. The workbooks involve students directly in the learning process with written lessons keyed to the video programs. This series is divided into these three sets: Practical Reading, General Reading, and Prose Literature.

KET/GED Series

This series of 43 videotapes and accompanying student workbooks helps adults prepare for the GED (General Education Development) test. The settings, scenes, characters, and subject matter for the lessons are taken from everyday life, with an emphasis on using the tools of a basic education to understand and cope with day-to-day living, at home and on the job. With completion of the course, students will have developed the skills necessary to prepare for and pass the GED test. Their skills will include: analyzing and interpreting reading passages; reviewing the critical skills needed to write clearly and effectively; and solving everyday problems using principles of basic math, including algebra and geometry. This series is checked out by sets of 4 to 5 videos.
