How to Join a Listserv ...

To begin with, what is a listserv?
A listserv is an electronic mail (e-mail) discussion forum focusing on a certain field of interest. It's really a mailing list which sends e-mail messages to a group of people (subscribers). Subscribers can post messages for the entire group. A listserv moderator watches the discussions to keep them on target and to help maintain proper electronic etiquette.

Some of the listservs in the field of adult education are:
NIFL-ESL -- ESL literacy & policy issues
NIFL-family -- family literacy issues
NIFL-workplace -- workplace issues
NIFL-homeless -- homeless issues
NIFL-ld -- learning disabilities issues

How do you subscribe to any of the above listservs?
Using the ESL listserv as an example, create a message with the following text in the body (no remarks in subject line):

subscribe NIFL-ESL_your name

Where (your name) is, type your first & last name without ( ) - example:

subscribe NIFL-ESL Kay Perry

If you have a signature block, please turn it off.

For the above listservs, send message to: listproc@literacy.nifl.gov

There are many more listservs, ask your friends and colleagues.
