PROJECT VITAL CONFERENCEProject VITAL (Volunteers in Training Adult Literacy) will be hosting its annual '96 conference on June 9,10, 11 in Austin, Texas at the Red Lion Hotel. VITAL is a special project funded by the Texas Education Agency out of the Division of Adult and Community Education. The three-day conference will cover topics such as literacy partnerships, ESL and basic literacy instructional techniques, family literacy and Even Start, welfare reform and citizenship, professional development and updates on block grants and local workforce development boards. Additional presentations will include volunteer management and technology in adult literacy. There will also be presentations on board development and fund raising. Registration will begin on Monday at 8:30 a.m. Both Laubach Literacy Action and Literacy Volunteers of America will have representatives present to discuss new training developments for member agencies. Our keynote speaker is Alice Johnson, Policy Specialist, from the National Institute for Literacy in Washington, D.C. Ms. Johnson will give updates on current issues including welfare reform, America Reads, the Adult Education Act and funding for literacy. VITAL is fortunate to have many supportive sponsors this year including Southwestern Bell, Literacy Volunteers of America, Texas Adult Literacy Laubach, Texas Association for Literacy and Adult Education, the Texas Center for Adult Literacy and Learning, and Texas Education Agency. Advance registration is $35.00 per participant and checks can be made payable to VITAL.
