The Texas Center
for Adult Literacy & Learning
and KAMU Television Provide GED on TV
By: Georgiana Vacarro
In a partnership effort to bring literacy training into the homes of the viewing audience in the Brazos Valley,
the Texas Center for Adult Literacy and Learning (TCALL) and KAMU Television are providing a complete video
series of the Kentucky Educational Television programs, teaching reading, writing and mathematics skills on
multiple levels, funded by a grant from the Texas Workforce Commission. The first airing of the series will be
completed at the end of May 1997. The entire program will be shown again during 1997.
In an effort to supplement the many programs offered by literacy providers in the Brazos Valley area, TCALL
has purchased additional sets of the video literacy tapes. These tapes may be borrowed by literacy providers from
the surrounding communities which receive KAMU in order to reinforce their programs. During our license period,
agencies may copy any of the materials for their own use.
Additionally, TCALL has workbooks and teacher's guides free of charge. As the materials are entered into the
computer tracking system, they are being made available for circulation. The tapes will be checked out in units of
five tapes in a series at a time. TCALL has workbooks for GED study which are written in the Spanish language,
also.
The response from our area literacy partners has been encouraging. We hope to hear from still others. The
generous cooperation of KAMU Television is a vital part of the success of the project. For further information,
contact Georgiana Vaccaro at (800) 441-7323.
