FREE & INEXPENSIVE

The Texas Adult Literacy Clearinghouse has a hot topic packet available free of charge. The packet is titled Proposal Writing. It covers general information on the different aspects of grant proposal writing and tips on this type of writing. It also contains additional resources of information and possible funding sources.

The Texas Adult Literacy Clearinghouse also has classroom materials and teachers' guides for English as a Second Language (ESL) adult literacy lessons on immunization. These materials are intended for high beginning through high intermediate/advanced levels and can be used as part of a health unit or independently. The above items, which are available free of charge, were provided by the Texas Department of Health.

The Adult, Career, and Vocational Education ERIC Clearinghouse has a new Trends and Issues Alert titled Women and Literacy. This Alert gives some basic information and statistics on women and literacy along with an extensive reference list of additional resources.

The National Clearinghouse for Bilingual Education (NCBE) produces FORUM, a free bimonthly publication concerned with the education of language minority adults. This publication is free of charge.

The International Reading Association has composed various one-page papers concerned with questions that are frequently asked about literacy issues. The topics include Time Spent Teaching Reading and Literacy-Related Activities, International Comparisons of Literacy and Illiteracy, Trends in Literacy, and Adult Literacy Rates in the United States.

The National Association of Elementary School Principals has various resources available concerning children's education. "The Apple of Your Eye: Helping Your Grandchildren Succeed in School" includes a 16 page brochure and a 15 minute video with tips for involved grandparents: "Little Beginnings: How to Start Your Child on a Lifetime of Learning" includes a video and brochure with learning activities and advice for parents; and "Now We're Talking: Keeping in Touch with Your Child's School" is an 18 page brochure with helpful information for parents about becoming involved in their child's school. These three items come in sets of 25 each and cost $10 for members and $13 for nonmembers.

The Rural Clearinghouse for Lifelong Education and Development has published Rural Telecommunications Digest. This resource explores the issues related to getting rural American on-line, considering barriers to access and barriers to use. The Clearinghouse also has published a digest on rural literacy.

The Division of Adult Education and Literacy of the U.S. Department of Education publishes the quarterly newsletter A.L.L. Points Bulletin dealing with adult education. It highlights current research and new publications related to literacy issues. ESL and workplace literacy issues are also explored. This publication is free of charge.
