"ASK TCALL"
Questions & Answers

QUESTION: What does TCALL stand for and what is its purpose?

ANSWER: TCALL stands for Texas Center for Adult Literacy and Learning. It is housed at Texas A&M University in College Station, TX within the College of Education, Educational Human Resources Development Department. Dr. Don Seaman is the Director and George Matott is the Associate Director of the Center. TCALL was approved and established by the Texas A&M University Board of Regents in 1989 to foster the development of programs and projects to enhance literacy efforts in Texas. There are currently five projects within the Center.

QUESTION: So what are these projects?

ANSWER: The first project funded through TCALL was the Texas Adult Literacy Clearinghouse. The Clearinghouse (funded by Texas Education Agency, Division of Adult and Community Education) has been operating continuously since 1989.

In order to expand TCALL services, TCALL wrote a proposal for the Texas Literacy Resource Center (funded through the Texas Department of Commerce) which was awarded in 1993.

Two other projects are the Southern Literacy Communications Consortium (SLCC) and the Community Network Development and Demonstration Project (Community Net). These projects are mainly working with the enhancement of technology in the field of literacy.

An additional project is the Adult Education Professional Development and Curriculum Consortium Liaison (AEPDC Liaison) which serves adult education and literacy providers by matching program needs with consortium services.

QUESTION: How do I receive more information about these projects or the services being offered?

ANSWER: All you have to do is call (800) 441 -READ (7323). Once you call you can request to talk about a specific project or just let us know what information you need. We will direct your call to the appropriate project representative.
