State Leadership Activities

Texas Adult Education Credential Project (Look for the newsletter link.) The Texas Adult Education Credential raises the bar of professionalism for adult educators. To serve the needs of future adult students, adult education practitioners require and deserve systematic, standardized and meaningful professional development. The Texas project is one of the most innovative adult education professional development projects underway anywhere in the nation. Check out the latest edition in the Credential Project’s series of newsletters, informing you of the latest developments with the Credential.

Texas Family Literacy Resource Center Website. If you haven’t visited the TFLRC website lately, you are missing out on a rich resource for family literacy practitioners. The site is organized by the components of a comprehensive family literacy program: Adult Education, Early Childhood, Parent Education, Interactive Literacy (ILA), Home-based Instruction, Program Administration, and Program Evaluation. Within each component section you will find an overview of that component, as well as resource lists, assessment information, and references. New pages are under construction for Birth Through Two and New Coordinators initiatives, and updates to the entire site are planned this summer. So check back often for new developments.

For and About Adult Literacy Learners

The Learning Edge and The Northern Edge. The Learning Edge and the Northern Edge are online literacy newspapers from Canada designed for adult literacy students. These web-based resources are interactive, and easy to use activities for adult learners using Flash. The Learning Edge has a new edition, with a focus on finding employment. Activities include Networking, Using the Internet to find jobs and Sample Interview Questions, as well as stories from learners about their work.

Memorias del silencio: Footprints of the Borderland. Border Senses is a bilingual literary magazine created to provide a venue for emerging and established writers and graphic artists of the Southwest and U.S./Mexico border to share their words and images. Border Senses, in conjunction with El Paso Community College’s Community Education Program and with the support of The City of El Paso, had the opportunity to host a series of Creative Writing Workshops for Migrant Farm Workers. These workshops were designed to offer the necessary tools to students so that they could write their own stories. Memorias del Silencio, Footprints of the Borderland is the product of these workshops.

Scorecard for Skills. Scorecard for Skills was created to help U.S. organizations’ measure and demonstrate the relationship between their workplace education investments, including workplace basic skills, and measures of organizational performance. By working through this site, you will be able to produce your own balanced scorecard for skills.

WE LEARN: Writings by Women Learners. WE LEARN (Women Expanding Literacy Education Action Resource Network) values and promotes literacy and literature for all women, especially those who wish their reading and writing were stronger. Women’s literacy and education are foundational to women’s full participation in family, community, and society. This page features links to writing done be women learners.

Family Literacy

2006 Child Well-Being Index (CWI) Results. This annual index is a publication of The Foundation for Child Development. One of the nation’s most comprehensive measurements of trends in the quality of life of children and youth, the CWI shows that America has made great strides since 1975 in the well-being of children in many important areas but one: Education.

Community Corner. Community Corner shows online content relevant to low-income, ethnically diverse populations. The site has carefully chosen links and information that connect people to community, education and employment-related resources that can benefit the whole family. Site is sponsored by Computers for Youth, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to close the learning gap between low-income children and their more affluent peers by improving the home learning environment.

Connect for Kids. Connect for Kids makes the best use of communications technologies, specifically the Internet, to give adults – parents, grandparents, guardians, educators, advocates, policymakers, elected officials and others – the tools and information they need to improve the lives of children, youth and families. The Connect for Kids online publication covers more than 30 topics ranging from arts to youth development, foster care to adoption, and welfare reform to oral health.
