Web Sites for EducatorsABLE Net has established a technology resource center for Adult Basic and Literacy Education practitioners throughout Pennsylvania. ABLE Net works closely with the Pennsylvania Regional Professional Development Centers to assist practitioners in integrating technology into the instructional, administrative, and staff development aspects of their programs. ABLE Net provides support with regard to new developments in hardware/software, changes affecting the online community, and applications of technology for classroom, staff development and administrative uses. The online lesson plans provide resources to help teach life and employability skills. http://www.lhup.edu/ablenet/. Beginners Central is an online tutorial for the beginning Internet user. Chapter 1 provides the learner with a brief history of the Internet, how it works and what is needed to work the Internet. Includes the basic concepts and practical details of search techniques on the Internet. It is a self-paced tutorial written in an easy to understand manner. http://www.northernwebs.com/bc/. Beyond Blame: Reacting to the Terrorist Attack. In response to the terrorist tragedy of last September 11 and subsequent attacks against Arab-Americans, Education Development Center, Inc. developed a free 30-page curriculum for middle and high school students focused on issues of justice and mislaid blame. Co-sponsored by The Justice Project and the Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation (VVAF), Beyond Blame was designed by a team of EDC researchers and curriculum writers who were concerned that the terrorist attacks have created a hostile climate for Arab-Americans-much like the climate Japanese-Americans faced following the attack on Pearl Harbor. Potentially useful in GED social studies or as an ESL conversation-starter, the curriculum is available online in both English and Spanish at: http://www.edc.org/spotlight/schools/beyondblame.htm. Blue Web'N provides links to online resources and lesson plans. This site enables searches by content area, application type, and audience. It provides bibliographic references to online resources meeting search criteria, including content information and site ratings. Searches can be done for links for lesson plans, tutorials and web-based activities. http://www.kn.pacbell.com/wired/bluewebn/. Internet Basics for ESL Students. This is a 14-Lesson Introduction to Using Computers and the Internet for Students of English as a Second Language. The lesson covers using e-mail, joining a mailing list, learning to search the Internet, and finding newsgroups archives. http://iteslj.org/s/ib/. Museums Online is the gateway to the world's museums. This Website provides fast access to a broad range of museum sources and is divided into these categories: Art and Design; History and Culture; and Science and Technology. Provides helpful, educational, and entertaining resources to Website visitors. http://www.museumstuff.com/. Parent Made Developmental Toys: Integrating Parenting, Self-Esteem Literacy, and Fun. The Ohio Literacy Resource Center (OLRC) Web Team maintains these pages. Through these lesson plans for literacy projects, parents can learn to make toys for their children such as bean bags, puppets, safety signs, two-piece puzzles and more! http://literacy.kent.edu/Oasis/PACT/toc.html. Portals to the World contains selective links providing authoritative, in-depth information about the nations of the world. They are arranged by nation or area with the links sorted into a wide range of categories including country reports, history, travel, and genealogy. Published by the Library of Congress. http://www.loc.gov/rr/international/portals.html. The Literacy List. The Adult Literacy Resource Institute (A.L.R.I.) sponsors this website. The Literacy List is a large collection of free Adult Basic Education and ESL/ESOL Web sites, electronic lists ("listservs"), and other internet resources for adult basic skills learners and teachers. The resources have been suggested by adult literacy and ESOL practitioners. Also on this site is the Adult Education Software List which is a detailed list of adult educational software programs for use in adult literacy, Pre-GED, GED, and workplace education classes. http://www.alri.org/. WebQuest is an inquiry-oriented activity in which most or all of the information used by learners is drawn from the Web. This site is designed to serve as a resource for teachers or tutors who are using the WebQuest model to teach with the web.
