available free or on loan. Borrowers must be affiliated with a program

This series contains two titles:
Bringing Literacy Within Reach: Identifying and Teaching Adults with Learning
Disabilities and Literacy and Learning Disabilities: A Handbook for Literacy
Workers. These books discuss screening procedures, teacher strategies, and

Dyslexia: An Introduction for Parents,
Teachers and/or Individuals with Dyslexia
Learning Disabilities Association of Canada (1991).
A handy booklet on dyslexia. Some of the topics addressed are terminology, myths,
interventions, guidelines and suggestions, and additional resources. (5 copies)

A 33-minute video. Four adults with learning disabilities speak about the difficulties,
challenges, and achievements they have experienced. (2 copies)
What is a Learning Disability.
Learning Disabilities Association of Canada.
A video that is a good introduction to learning disabilities. The video is less than 10
minutes long which makes it ideal for the beginning of informative meetings or training
sessions. (2 copies)
On My Mind: A Collection of Student
Writings.
Cillern, Kristin Floyd (1991).
A collection of student writings on topics such as personal struggles, life stories,
children, drugs, and heritage. The second section is titled "Questions to Consider" and
gives suggestions on how to use the materials in the classroom. (3 copies)

Mother Was
Abdullah, Omanii (1993).
A thought provoking, emotional book of poetry. The poems focus on the
experiences, relationships, and pride of black American men. (3 copies)
Math Literacy
Smith, Catherine LeLong (1994).
A Beginning level math curriculum that covers topics such as estimating and rounding,
using a calculator, and measurement. It is designed to allow the student to use a
variety of techniques to solve the problems and relate math to other subjects along with
real-life applications. (3 copies)
Thirty Lessons in Note-Taking
Pirie, Jennifer and Pirie, Alex (1990).
A series of lessons on how to take notes. Some of the topics covered are: short
notes, choosing useful information, notes from an interview, notes from a report, turning
notes into graphs, and your own research project. (2 copies)
Following Directions: Advanced
Kessler, Rikki and Friedland, Joyce (1988).
This workbook contains 34 lessons on following directions. These exercises are
challenging for the adult learner and can be used with all learners. (2 copies)
Immigrant Learners & Their Families:
Literacy to Connect the Generations
Weinstein-Shr, Gail and Quintero, Elizabeth (1995).
This is a collaboration effort with authors such as Elsa Roberts Auerbach, Heide
Spruck Wrigley, and Elizabeth Quintero, writing a chapter each. The book is divided
into three sections: Program Design: Focus on Collaboration; Curriculum: Drawing
on Learner Strengths; and Where We Are, Where We're Going. (3 copies)
Cooperative Learning:
A Response to Linguistic and Cultural Diversity
Holt, Daniel D. (1993).
Each chapter is written by a different author allowing for a variety of ideas. The book
is divided into two parts. Part one covers the foundation of cooperative learning. Part
two looks at how to use cooperative learning along with having model units. Each unit
covers a different subject and grade level and can easily be adapted to different

Bringing Up Our Children:
Articles from the Knoxville New-Sentinel
Alexander, Susan et al. (1990).
This book is laid out in an easy to read format. Each topic has an article and a
section titled "For More Help and Things to Try." Some of the items addressed are:
Teaching Right from Wrong, Supporting Schoolwork, Television Decisions, and the "Blended" Family. (2 copies)
