From the October 28, 1998 issue:

Dr. Tom Sticht has developed data to show that by the late 1990s, dollars spent per adult education participant lost about three quarters of their 1966 value. Using constant 1995 dollar values, spending per participant dropped from about $274 to $73 in actual value by 1998. Dr. Sticht developed the chart below to follow up his presentation at DAEL's National Conference of State Directors:

The Sticht report, Beyond 2000: Future Directions for Adult Education, is available from the Clearinghouse at the Office of Vocational and Adult Education, Division of Adult Education and Literacy, U.S. Department of Education, Washington, DC. 20202-7240. Contact Rick Gallmon at 202/205-9996 or e-mail rickie_gallmon@ed.gov.

From the November 11, 1998 issue:

Preliminary results from a survey by the Conference Board, under contract with the Office of Vocational and Adult Education, show that employers expected and received skill improvements for workers participating in workplace education programs including: improved ability to listen, understand and apply information; greater willingness to learn; positive attitudes about change; better team work; improved ability to use documents, numbers and manuals; improved capacity to solve problems; and better ability to communicate by using English in the workplace. After research is completed this winter, the Conference Board and the Division of Adult Education will work cooperatively on a campaign to promote employer interest in establishing workplace education.
