Youth in Adult Education Section Coming Soon on Community Partnerships for Adult Learning (C-PAL) Website. Developed and maintained by MPR Associates, Inc. for the Office of Vocational and Adult Education at the U.S. Department of Education, the Community Partnerships for Adult Learning site is about strengthening ties among businesses, libraries, colleges, national nonprofits, faith-based and community-based organizations, social services and workforce development agencies, federally funded state-run programs, and other providers to improve the accessibility and quality of adult education. Coming this spring is a new section in the ToolBox focused on youth participating in adult education programs.

Program Administration

National Reporting System (NRS) Website Redesigned. The NRS has redesigned their site and you may use it to increase your knowledge about why we collect student data and the usefulness of data/reports in program and professional development planning. You may create a login and take the courses appropriate for you and your NRS expertise.

Program Administrators’ Sourcebook: A Resource on NCSALL’s Research for Adult Education Program Administrators. Jackie Taylor, Cristine Smith, and Beth Bingman of National Center for the Study of Adult Learning and Literacy developed this sourcebook in collaboration with five local program administrators, presenting NCSALL’s research findings in short sections related to key challenges that adult education program managers face in their work. Implications of these research findings for program structure and services are presented, as well as strategies for implementing change based on these implications. TCALL’s Clearinghouse Library also disseminates hard copies of this 72 page document FREE by mail to Texas educators.

New Online Courses for
Literacy Volunteers on Verizon Thinkfinity

Sponsored by the National Center for Family Literacy and ProLiteracy Worldwide and funded by Verizon Communications, the Verizon Literacy Campus (VLN) website is an Internet tool developed to recruit, orient and train literacy volunteers. Online courses are available for existing and potential volunteers, as well as program directors and staff of literacy programs. Some courses are self-paced, others instructor-led, and some will be a blend of the two types.

Phonemic Awareness Instruction for Adult Literacy Learners - provides an introduction to research-based reading instruction, develops skill in informally assessing adults’ phonemic awareness, and demonstrates how to incorporate phonemic awareness activities into lessons.

Citizenship: Preparing Students for the Interview - covers what happens during the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) interview, how to ask practice interview questions in a variety of ways, teaching students strategies to overcome gaps in communication, and simulating the interview process as accurately as possible.

How Can My Organization Get Involved In Literacy - designed for organizations that want to improve the literacy skills of adults and families in their community—covers how to assess your organization’s capacity and be prepared to initiate a partnership with a literacy organization in your area.

Reaching Out to Homeless and Migrant Families, Part I compares the similarities and differences of these two populations, to enable planning of comprehensive services to meet their needs; should be taken before Part II.

Reaching Out to Homeless and Migrant Families, Part II - introduces program directors to characteristics of homeless and migrant individuals and families and the daily challenges they face; examines three steps in planning for educational services.

Federal Resources for Educational Excellence (FREE)
FREE is a result of more than 30 federal agencies forming a working group to make hundreds of federally supported teaching and learning resources easier to find. Special areas highlighted on the free Web site this month include Black History Month and President’s Day.

The Lesson Plan Builder. California’s Adult Education Office, Outreach and Technical Assistance Network created The Lesson Plan Builder to make it easier for adult educators to develop quality lesson plans that address adult education content standards in the context of CASAS and SCANS competencies. The Lesson Plan Builder provides a user-friendly template to develop lessons, provides sample lessons as models, allows the user to “Backward Design” a lesson, provides a quick link to CASAS and SCANS competencies, and stores lessons for future use.
