Spreading the Success
Stories from Texas Adult Learners, 2003-2005
A Compilation of Success Stories from the Literacy Links Newsletters

Edited by Harriet Vardiman Smith, Dominique T. Chlup, Peggy Sue Durbin, and Ken Appelt, this book features stories written by adult learners who have overcome obstacles to achieve success in meeting their educational and life goals. The writers include recent immigrants struggling to learn and work in a new country, a high school drop-out striving as an adult to earn a GED, a teenage learner struggling to overcome substance abuse and homelessness, women balancing their learning goals with family life, a dropout who overcame learning disabilities and depression to ultimately earn a Ph.D., and more.

Intended for instructional use with adults in both classroom and tutoring situations, the stories can be used not only for reading instruction and as starting points for writing activities, but to inspire discussion about setting goals and persisting toward educational achievement, despite life obstacles such as those described by these adult learners.

Twenty stories in large-print student book include both Lexile and Fry readability levels. TCALL gratefully acknowledges the folks at MetaMetrics, the Lexile Company (www.lexile.com), for conducting a free readability analysis of the stories in this compilation book.

The Teacher’s Guide is a reprint of one developed in 1999 by Pennsylvania ABLE (Adult Basic and Literacy Education) for use with their state’s learner success stories.
