About the TCALL Adult Literacy Fellowship

Since 2005, the Texas Adult & Family Literacy Clearinghouse Project has included funding for two Fellowships to be competitively awarded to doctoral students conducting research in adult literacy-related topics at Texas A&M University. Go to our Glossary of Key Terms in Adult & Family Literacy for the working definitions used in evaluating TCALL Fellowship applications.

These generous fellowships consist of a one-year award, which may be used to offset the cost of travel expenses to conferences, dissertation research, and/or tuition, fees, and maintenance while a student is enrolled at Texas A&M University.  During their fellowship year, students will have the opportunity to present their work at national conferences and work toward publication in peer-reviewed journals.

• transitioning English Language Learners into adult basic or secondary education (ABE or ASE/GED)and from ASE or GED into postsecondary or vocational training programs
• potential application in Texas of Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training (I-BEST), as used in Washington State (I-BEST pairs adult basic education or English as a Second Language with workforce training.)
• how programs can successfully recruit and retain “hard to reach” adult learner populations
• persistence strategies for adult literacy learners - both learner and program strategies
• relationship between learner retention and successful transition
• impact of teacher professional development - particularly current and ongoing Texas initiatives - on adult literacy learner outcomes
• workplace or employer-sponsored literacy
• performance accountability and performance measures for Texas adult education programs
• implementing distance education or other technologies in adult literacy programs
• economic impact of earning a GED
• serving youth in adult literacy classrooms - particularly court-ordered youth
• teaching in multi-level classrooms
• Texas Adult Education Content Standards implementation and instructional outcomes
• Even Start or other family literacy research focused on the adult education or parenting component
