Timely Topics: A Collection of Articles from Literacy Links

FOREWORD

Educators are a unique bunch. They think deep thoughts and get to work doing great work. The chapters included in this volume are excellent examples of the educators' unique blend of theory and practice.

The concepts and background research that form the foundation of the chapters are clear. At the same time, this is a volume aimed at people who are in the field of adult and family literacy and who are determined to make a difference in the lives of the people they serve. Such a blend of sophisticated thought and pragmatic direction is rare indeed. I was delighted to find it so prevalent in this book.

The Texas Center for Adult Literacy and Learning (TCALL) has been a key ingredient to our College's success for many years. The Center has served as our primary link to thousands of professionals devoted to the educational welfare of adults and their families across the State.

Most researchers and practitioners in adult and family literacy would concur that no single approach or program promises success for every individual or family. On the other hand, literate parents who actively engage in the literacy education of their children offer a priceless gift to the future of our State and Nation. The gifts of economic promise, civic engagement, and life-long learning are of incredible value to the physical, spiritual, and moral development of citizens of all ages.

I am privileged to work with the professionals who edited this volume. They bring honor to our College by their work. I trust they will bring wisdom and illumination to you.
