Responses from teacher lesson evaluations
Lesson 1.1
Title of the lesson: Manufacturing industry
Number of students that participated in the lesson: 10
Hours needed to prepare for the lesson: 1.5
Hours needed to complete the lesson: 7
Please add any additional comments and/or questions you have about this lesson:
1. The level of vocabulary was a little high perhaps. However using the cognates I feel that gave the students another way of finding meaning.
2. There was only one reference to jobs in the Initial Inquiry.
3. We needed another way to understand the steps for writing a paragraph. So we wrote the steps for a favorite recipe.
4. I wasn't sure about keeping the 3x5 cards with 3 questions on it. After I answered the questions in class, I saved the cards.
How did you use the assessments mentioned in the teacher lesson plans?
I used some of the assessments in the teacher lesson plans
If you used the assessments, what type of data did they reveal?
The reading questions revealed how the students understood the passage
If you used the assessments, what did you do with the data you collected from the lessons?
I filed all the materials in the student portfolio
Lesson 1.2

Number of students that participated in the lesson: 8
Hours needed to prepare for the lesson: 2
Hours needed to complete the lesson: 8
Please add any additional comments and/or questions you have about this lesson:
1. The vocabulary did seem a little high for the level, but the use of cognates helped with meanings in vocabulary,
2. the exercise demonstrating word familiarities was also very good for expanding vocabulary,
3. Also the use of categories helped to reinforce vocabulary
How did you use the assessments mentioned in the teacher lesson plans?
I used some of the assessments in the teacher lesson plans

The 3x5 index cards with questions on them revealed whether or not the student understood the passage.
If you used the assessments, what did you do with the data you collected from the lessons?
I filed each piece in the student portfolio
Lesson 1.3
Title of the lesson: The manufacturing process
Number of students that participated in the lesson: 8
Hours needed to prepare for the lesson: 1.5
Hours needed to complete the lesson: 7
Please add any additional comments and/or questions you have about this lesson:
On page 6 of the student workbook there were six pictures which I assumed were the six processes for making a tire. There was no mention of this in the teacher lesson plan book or the student workbook. The writing rubric showed that students still need practice in using the words, first, next etc.
How did you use the assessments mentioned in the teacher lesson plans?
I all of the assessments in the teacher lesson plans
If you used the assessments, what type of data did they reveal?
The writing rubric showed that the students still need practice using transitional words, first, next, then, after that, and finally. In the first lesson 'after that' was used but in the second lesson 'next' was used. I don't think that is fault but I thought I'd mention it.
If you used the assessments, what did you do with the data you collected from the lessons?
I corrected the review questions, copied them for the student portfolio. I did the same with the sentences/paragraph.
Lesson 1.4
Title of the lesson: The workplace environment
Number of students that participated in the lesson: 8
Hours needed to prepare for the lesson: 1.5
Hours needed to complete the lesson: 8
Please add any additional comments and/or questions you have about this lesson:
Listening was intrinsic to the speaking dialogues. The students had to listen to the instructor in order to do the dialogues. The sentences strips were perhaps too general so the students had to really think. Some students tried to make one long dialogue, including asking for clarification, giving and taking directions.
How did you use the assessments mentioned in the teacher lesson plans?
I used some of the assessments in the teacher lesson plans
If you used the assessments, what type of data did they reveal?
Some students needed help with pronunciation, others with completing the dialogues using the sentence strips. Some students were maybe a little self conscious about doing the TPR. They need more practice in performing role plays, and creating these.
If you used the assessments, what did you do with the data you collected from the lessons?
The written comprehension questions are collected for the student's portfolio. I did not use the writing rubric as I feel they need more practice on composing role plays.
Lesson 1.5
Title of the lesson: Jobs in manufacturing
Number of students that participated in the lesson: 6
Hours needed to prepare for the lesson: 1
Hours needed to complete the lesson: 8
Please add any additional comments and/or questions you have about this lesson:
1. For extra practice in writing/speaking I made a handout of nouns and related verbs. we started it on the board then the students completed it themselves and practiced reading the phrases in pairs. This time the students wrote sentences with the job title and related verbs Again the teacher began by modeling the sentences on the flip chart then the students continued on their own. Later we read then in unison and in pairs. I could not find the Effective Team Member Checklist. I'll have another look. 2. I used most of the assessments in the teacher lesson plan.
3. They revealed that two students are still not very good at sentence writing.
4. Student original papers of sentences etc. were corrected and returned to the student while copies were filed in the student portfolio.
How did you use the assessments mentioned in the teacher lesson plans?
I used some of the assessments in the teacher lesson plans
If you used the assessments, what type of data did they reveal?
The assessments revealed that two students in particular are still not able to write complete sentences.
If you used the assessments, what did you do with the data you collected from the lessons?
The originals were corrected and returned to the students. Copies were placed in the student files or portfolios.
Lesson 2.1
Title of the lesson: Machines and processes
Number of students that participated in the lesson: 8
Hours needed to prepare for the lesson: 1
Hours needed to complete the lesson: 8
Please add any additional comments and/or questions you have about this lesson:
We made a visit to the Manufacturing Laboratory at CTTC. The students were provided with a teacher made handout on which they had to take notes about the various machines they saw there. The visit was very worth while. The students saw first hand exactly what the various machines did. Copies of the students' work is in their folders. This added another hour to our time, so that the lesson took about 9 hours. We had to spend a lot of time working on definitions and understanding processes even though we had worked on this before.
How did you use the assessments mentioned in the teacher lesson plans?
I all of the assessments in the teacher lesson plans
If you used the assessments, what type of data did they reveal?
Sentences writing is improving. The three questions at the end of the reading are more appropriate.
If you used the assessments, what did you do with the data you collected from the lessons?
Corrected the sentences and filed copies in the student folder.
Lesson 2.2
Title of the lesson: Hand tools
Number of students that participated in the lesson: 6
Hours needed to prepare for the lesson: 1.5
Hours needed to complete the lesson: 8
Please add any additional comments and/or questions you have about this lesson:
Small pictures of the tools didn't come in the student book so I created some from the large pictures. I shrunk the large pictures mounted them on a couple of pages for the students. They had been mentioned in the teacher's lesson plans. The reading passage consisted of dialogue and inset background information. This was a little distracting for the students. With more practice this should be no problem. I liked the manner in which the verb were related to the subject nouns and the object nouns. This was a very good stepping stone to speaking and writing sentences. The use of the use of a diagram for building a paragraph was also very good, in my opinion. It was a real visual learning tool for the students.
How did you use the assessments mentioned in the teacher lesson plans?
I all of the assessments in the teacher lesson plans
If you used the assessments, what type of data did they reveal?
It revealed that the students understood the sentence and paragraph building. building.

Please add any additional comments and/or questions you have about this lesson:
Most students needed guidance with the workbook especially writing the paragraph.
How did you use the assessments mentioned in the teacher lesson plans?
I all of the assessments in the teacher lesson plans
If you used the assessments, what type of data did they reveal?
The students needed to be reminded about the paragraph indent.
If you used the assessments, what did you do with the data you collected from the lessons?
Corrected it, copied it, and put it the student's file.
Lesson 2.4
Title of the lesson: Effective internal communication - Oral
Number of students that participated in the lesson: 6
Hours needed to prepare for the lesson: 1.5
Hours needed to complete the lesson: 8
Please add any additional comments and/or questions you have about this lesson:
The Teacher Lesson Plans emphasized listening skills. I feel there should have perhaps been an active Listening exercise. Also the Plans called for the students to complete the Effective Collaborator Rubric. I couldn't find it. There is an Oral Communication Rubric in the Training Manual.
How did you use the assessments mentioned in the teacher lesson plans?
I used some of the assessments in the teacher lesson plans
If you used the assessments, what type of data did they reveal?
The students needed a lot of guidance to complete the assessment. The initial activity had a lot of 'talk' by the teacher and the vocabulary was on the difficult side, so I think that is why the students needed help at the end.
If you used the assessments, what did you do with the data you collected from the lessons?
I filed the lesson review in the students file/portfolio.
Lesson 2.5
Title of the lesson: Effective internal communication-Written
Number of students that participated in the lesson: 6
Hours needed to prepare for the lesson: 7
Hours needed to complete the lesson: 7.5
Please add any additional comments and/or questions you have about this lesson:
I liked the form and the personnel schedule that the students had to complete. The sentence practice with the cut out words was excellent also.
How did you use the assessments mentioned in the teacher lesson plans?
I all of the assessments in the teacher lesson plans
If you used the assessments, what type of data did they reveal?
The students understood what they read. They could read the dialogue. And, they could make the sentences using the paper squares with the words on them. The students were able to make a variety of sentences as well as practice unhjmmmmmmvgb c3 [sic]
If you used the assessments, what did you do with the data you collected from the lessons?
Monitored the student's work, corrected the forms and the memorandum.
Lesson 3.1
Title of the lesson: Quality control and addurance [sic]
Number of students that participated in the lesson: 6
Hours needed to prepare for the lesson: 1
Hours needed to complete the lesson: 8
Please add any additional comments and/or questions you have about this lesson:
There are eight activities in the ESL component alone. These take time to complete. In the writing segment the student book 'read' make a list of features you would like included when you buy a new TV. We did this. However the assessment called for a written paragraph. We will go back and do the paragraph.
How did you use the assessments mentioned in the teacher lesson plans?
I all of the assessments in the teacher lesson plans
If you used the assessments, what type of data did they reveal?
One student probably should have some individual help with the physical act of writing. Another is still having trouble forming sentences. her sentences still sound like a phonetic "Tex-Mex".
If you used the assessments, what did you do with the data you collected from the lessons?
I corrected it and copied it for the student portfolio.
Lesson 3.2
Title of the lesson: Personal safety/safety signs at work
Number of students that participated in the lesson: 6
Hours needed to prepare for the lesson: 1
Hours needed to complete the lesson: 8
Please add any additional comments and/or questions you have about this lesson:
The numbering in the student workbook started at page 10. That seemed odd. Each lesson in the student work book started on page 1. Also the work book was labeled 3.1 on the top of the page and 3.2 at the bottom. By my accounting it should have been Lesson 3.2. On pages 13 and 14 of the student workbook, the matching of the signs and definitions, there was no definition for sign #4. I was a little confuse about using the writing rubric on page 19 of the student book as the students were required to write descriptions of the signs. There was no story to be pulled out of the text.
How did you use the assessments mentioned in the teacher lesson plans?
I all of the assessments in the teacher lesson plans
If you used the assessments, what type of data did they reveal?
The students are trying to form sentences, but prepositions and word order are difficult for them.
If you used the assessments, what did you do with the data you collected from the lessons?
I corrected it and gently tried to make students aware of their mistakes. Then I copied it for the folder.
Lesson 3.3
Title of the lesson: Hazardous materials
Number of students that participated in the lesson: 6
Hours needed to prepare for the lesson: 1
Hours needed to complete the lesson: 5
Please add any additional comments and/or questions you have about this lesson:
The lesson was numbered 3.2 but by my count it should have been 3.3. I tried to s'speed' [sic] the lesson up by selecting fewer vocabulary words. Also I only managed the ESL section. I had done the Math section at a previous time.
How did you use the assessments mentioned in the teacher lesson plans?
I all of the assessments in the teacher lesson plans
If you used the assessments, what type of data did they reveal?
Paragraph writing needs to be still practiced but the students are less worried about writing now than before.
If you used the assessments, what did you do with the data you collected from the lessons?
I corrected it, and filed it in the student portfolio.
Additional comments from conference calls: do now know exactly which lesson they apply to:
- In Module 3: The teacher lesson plans begins with page 10, last assessment on page 11 of the teacher lesson plans – the description of the labels are not narrative, so that the writing rubric does not ‘fit’ very well. The writing rubric calls for an introduction and conclusion. That’s not what happens in descriptive writing.
- Lesson on Quality Control (maybe lesson 4.1). The objectives and assessments – the last objective, writing a paragraph – perhaps the writing rubric could be used here instead of in the safety signs at work.
