TCALL Receives Hastings Literacy Donation For Hurricane Victims

Oct. 4, 2005 - The Texas Center for the Advancement of Literacy and Learning (TCALL) received the Hastings Entertainment Literacy Donation as a combined effort from both the College Station and Bryan stores. Dominique Chlup, director of TCALL, was present to receive the check from store managers Dena Owens and Barry Bedford. “This is the first time we have received the literacy donation from Hastings and are quite excited to have been chosen as the new designated center in this community,” Chlup said. The literacy donation is given to one center in each community in which a Hastings is present. Hastings stores place jars near the checkout counter that are earmarked for literacy donations and Hastings determines the one center in that community that will receive the contribution indefinitely. “We were deciding how best to use this money in both the community and in the state when we came up with a wonderful initiative,” Chlup said. “We want to help the literacy providers most recently affected by Hurricane Rita rebuild their centers, and aid those centers providing services to the Hurricane Katrina evacuees now living in Texas.” TCALL plans to buy books, program materials and other learning resources for the various adult literacy and family literacy centers affected from the hurricanes.
