TCALL Receives Second Hastings Literacy Donation
For the second consecutive year, the Texas Center for the Advancement of Literacy and Learning (TCALL) has received the Hastings Entertainment Literacy Donation, a combined effort from both the College Station and Bryan stores.
Dominique Chlup, director of TCALL, said that last year, TCALL used the Hastings donation to rebuild various adult and family literacy centers affected from both Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
This year, Chlup said the money would be used to strengthen their own library’s resources. In particular, a series of DVDs entitled Conversations on Lifelong Learning will be added to the DVD collection. The series features interviews and conversations with some of the most notable individuals in the field of adult education.
“We think it’s wonderful that the Hastings’ monetary contribution will be used to provide resources and information to the state’s practitioners, adult education program directors, adult literacy learners, and possibly the faculty and graduate students at Texas A&M University who use our Literacy Resource Center here in the Bryan-College Station area,” Chlup said.
The Hastings Entertainment Literacy Donation is given to one center in each community in which a Hastings is present. Hastings stores place jars near the checkout counter that are earmarked for literacy donations. Customers freely donate to the literacy cause, and Hastings determines the one center in that community that will receive the contribution indefinitely.
