My Success Story Begins With A Goal

by Carlos Flores

My name is Carlos Flores and I am an adult learner. I have been taking adult education classes at the Irvington Learning Center of the Harris County Department of Education 2005.

When I first came to the Learning Center with a goal of learning English and improving my skills I was enrolled in ESL Level II. My teacher’s name then was Ms. Nguyen and with her I learned a lot of writing and pronunciation and now I can write and pronounce English correctly. Then I went to level III with Ms. Kirtland, thanks her I learned a lot of speaking and correct word usage. My next class was with Mr. Cote, and here I learned to read and use idioms. Idioms are great! I think I enjoyed learning to use them above anything else because when I speak and understand them, I feel I can speak and have a conversation with someone “like a native English speaker.”

Levels II, III, and IV have led me to where I am now, in ABE classes with my teacher, Ms. Phillips. Thanks her I’m learning a lot of Math, Language, and Reading with better understanding. All of this, plus enrolling in Job Readiness classes at the Irvington Learning Center is preparing me with by giving me the opportunity to practice more for my career. You see, my success story will both begin and end when I obtain my goal of obtaining my GED. It “begins” because it is at this point when I realize my dream that I feel my life will take off. I say it “ends” because my successes of being an adult learner here will stop. But this is a good thing, because thanks to what I have learned here I will go on to University and prepare myself for a career as a Computer Technician.

One day soon I hope to have my own business repairing computers, installing updates to programs and doing maintenance on computers, maybe even working at a big computer company. “You never know,” some say. But I do. And I know it began with a goal.
