Texas Even Start Administrative Manual

June 2004, (Revised January 2008, September 2008)

Program Accountability

PEMIS

PEIMS is the Public Education Information Management System. PEIMS is used by public schools as a means for student accounting. Texas requires that every participating Even Start child must be enrolled in PEIMS, even those aged birth through prekindergarten. When students are enrolled in PEIMS, they are given a student identification number. The child will continue to use that number during his/her entire public school career. Enrollment is required whether the Even Start grantee is a local education agency or a community-based organization.

It is recommended that grantees identify the PEIMS enrollment procedure with their local public school district as soon as the grant is awarded. The Even Start staff knows specific entry and exit dates for Even Start children; therefore, it is the responsibility of Even Start to furnish this information to school district personnel in a timely manner. It is recommended that programs establish clear and specific procedures for the exchange of PEIMS data as early in the grant award as possible.

There are specific guidelines for PEIMS enrollment. Instructions for PEIMS enrollment can be found at http://www.tea.state.tx.us/peims. Select PEIMS Data Standards for details. Local school districts can seek technical support at peimsdqo@tea.state.tx.us or contact their Education Service Center.
