2015 TRAIN Professional Development Calendar

This calendar includes local, state, and national professional development opportunities and events of interest to adult & family literacy practitioners in Texas. If you know of other professional development opportunities or important dates of interest to Texas practitioners, please submit them to our Calendar Committee for consideration. January 2015

January 5, 2015: GED Social Studies. Will be held at the Ysleta Community Center in El Paso, Texas from 8:15am - 4:15pm. The presentation will have hands on activities including creating an interactive notebook. The interactive notebook will be modeled for the participants while making connections to students' point of view. The session will incorporate political cartoons and writing development to ensure interdisciplinary studies of content. An academic vocabulary routine will be modeled to support explicit instruction in delivery of vocabulary.

January 5, 2015: Using Science Experiments in the Adult Education Classroom. Will be held at the Ysleta Community Center in El Paso, Texas from 8:15am - 4:15pm. The presentation will inform participants as to the enhancement of science instruction through the use of science experiments based on scientific inquiry.  The objectives of this presentation are to show that (1) using science experiments provides students with needed prior scientific knowledge as well as increased scientific vocabulary, (2) teaching in a content area easily allows for integration of other content areas, and (3) using a collaborative approach allows for differentiated instruction. The presentation includes a modeled science experiment and hands-on practice with several science experiments. The presentation is interactive and encourages active participation.

January 9, 2015: TWC Adult Education and Literacy Webinar – Career Pathway and Transition to College Implementation (Part 2). Part 1 was offered on December 5, 2014. Texas Workforce Commission will host this webinar from 11:00 a.m. to noon (CST) for a target audience of Adult Education Grant Recipients and their partners. The purpose is to assist with program implementation and management. Dates and time are subject to change. Please check with your local Grant Recipient for updates. January 19 - 20, 2015: Standards Based Instruction - Workshop A. Will be held at 5pm - 8pm for two nights in Brownsville, Texas. Trainer is Joni Vara. These Texas standards were developed by Texas adult educators between 2004 and 2007 and have been utilized widely. Clear standards allow educators to understand where to focus their efforts and shape overall instruction. Standards then are translated into curriculum and lessons for teaching the content of the standards to students. Classroom activities, assignments, and a range of formative and summative assessments all help determine whether or not students are absorbing the essential skills and knowledge included in the standards. Introductory session is 6 hours. Register here.

January 21, 2015: PD Coordinators - TRAIN PD Conference Call. This conference call provides guidance to PD Coordinators about needs and expectations for planning on-site TRAIN PD events. Harriet Smith will host the conference call from 2 to 3 pm Central Time (1 to 2 PM Mountain Time). A reminder with detailed information will be sent to the PD Coordinators Listserv prior to the event.

January 22, 2015: Leadership Excellence Academy (LEA) Cohort 7, Meeting #2: The new cohort of LEA participants will have a full-day meeting in Houston. LEA is a national leadership development and program improvement initiative developed by the National Adult Education Professional Development Consortium and ProLiteracy. Successful completers of the two-year program earn the nationally-recognized professional designation of Certified Manager of Program Improvement (CMPI). For more information about the Leadership Excellence Academy, see TCALL's LEA web page for Texas.

February 4, 2015: 2015 Winter Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) Business Meeting.Texas Workforce Commission AEL will host this all-day meeting in Houston as a Pre-Conference to the February 5-7 TALAE Annual Conference. The target audience is limited to specific leadership roles in AEL Grant Recipients and Sub-recipients. Pre-registration with TWC AEL is required. February 5-7, 2015: TALAE 2015 Annual Conference. Texas Association for Literacy & Adult Education will hold its annual conference February 5-7, 2015 at the Westin Galeria in Houston. For more information as plans are finalized, Visit the Conference page.

March 2015

March 16-18, 2015: 2015 Families Learning Summit and National Conference on Family Literacy. Houston, Texas will be the site of this annual event hosted by National Center for Families’ Learning. Formerly known as National Center for Family Literacy, NCFL has helped more than one million families make educational and economic progress by pioneering - and continuously improving - family literacy programs since 1989. March 25-28, 2015: TESOL International Convention and English Language Expo. Toronto, Ontario will be the site of this convention, which offers professional development opportunities to English language educators at all levels from around the world. Interactive sessions enable educators to develop a global perspective through the exchange of ideas and practices, and to integrate knowledge of current trends in the field while developing a professional network. March 25, 2015: Adult Education and Literacy Advisory Committee Quarterly Meeting. Texas Workforce Commission’s AEL Advisory Committee will meet from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the agency’s Austin headquarters. The committee is required to meet quarterly and report to the TWC Commissioners at least annually, and is charged with advising the Commission on: the development of policies and program priorities supporting the development of an educated and skilled workforce; the development of statewide curriculum guidelines and standards for AEL services that ensure a balance of education and workplace skill development; the development of a strategy for improving student transition to postsecondary education and career and technical education training; the development of a centralized system for collecting and tracking comprehensive data on adult basic education and literacy performance outcomes; the exploration of potential partnerships with entities in the nonprofit business communities and other entities to improve statewide literacy programs; and other issues the Commission considers appropriate.

April 2015

April 22-25, 2015: Commission on Adult Basic Education (COABE) National Conference. COABE will hold its conference in Denver, CO in partnership with Colorado Adult Education Professional Association (CAEPA). COABE is organized to advance national and international adult education and literacy opportunities for all persons. Voting members of Texas Association for Literacy and Adult Education (TALAE) are automatically members of COABE as well, and are eligible for membership registration rates for the COABE Conference.
