September 8, 2009: Far West GREAT Center Advisory Committee Meeting will be held from 10:00 am - noon. The location is yet to be determined.

September 9-10, 2009: New Administrators' Training for new adult education co-op and EL Civics grant directors/coordinators will be held at Texas LEARNS from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day. September 11-12, 2009: Far West Regional Training: Effective Instruction for All Adult Education Students including those with Special Learning Needs, Session 2 of 4: The content, techniques and strategies taught during this four-part training, conducted by Stacey Milberger, will provide teachers in the Far West Region with effective instructional methods for all adult education students, including those with special learning needs. This session will be held on Friday from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Socorro ISD - District Service Center in Training Room A, 12440 Rojas, El Paso. This is the second of four (4) sessions (remaining sessions: 11/20-21; 1/29-30). Attendees must participate in all four sessions to be eligible for the training stipend.

September 12, 2009: Culture and Learning in the ESOL Classroom, Session I of II will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Ruiz Branch Library, 1600 Grove Blvd., Austin 78741. The presenter is Linda Muñoz. This workshop is a 2-part session totaling 9 hours of professional development for adult ESOL instructors. This workshop will look at goals of cultural instruction as well as how culture is often learned. There will be hands on activities for teachers to do as they share with each other their own cultural experiences and values, discussing how these are similar to or different from those that their adult learners may hold, and developing strategies to both recognize similarities and bridge differences. September 18, 2009: Geometry and Measurement will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Houston READ Commission Training Center, 6402 Market St, Houston 77020. Presenter: Denise Johnson. Geometry and Measurement is designed to provide teachers with creative teaching techniques for units of measurement in different systems to assess the characteristics of lines and geometric figures. The training will include a review on how to convert from metric and customary measures; interpret lines and graphs (e.g., coordinates, perpendicular, parallel, intersections, slope); analyze geometric figures (e.g., angles, congruence, Pythagorean Theorem); and solve problems (e.g., length, perimeter, area, surface area, volume, weight). September 19, 2009: Effective Multilevel Strategies for ABE/ASE Learners (Modules 2 & 3) will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at Houston Community College, 3100 Main Street, Room TBA, Houston 77002. Presenter is Margaret Flint. This interactive training focuses on appropriate lesson planning strategies, group strategies, and effective multi-level activities. It includes theory and strategies to use in teaching all subjects of the GED to a multi-level class. Classroom management techniques, test preparation, orientation procedures, multi-sensory lesson planning, and proficiency objectives of the Texas Content standards will be presented. Participants who complete all three modules will receive a copy of Teaching Large Multilevel Classes by Natalie Hess. September 22, 2009: Effective Instruction for All Adult Education Students including Those with Special Learning Needs Training-of-Trainers Meeting #1 of 4 will be held at the Texas LEARNS office in Houston. September 23-25, 2009: Effective Instruction for All Adult Education Students including Those with Special Learning Needs Training #1 of 4 will be held at the Texas LEARNS office in Houston. This training, conducted by Neil Sturomski and Nancie Payne, national experts in the field of special learning needs, is for teachers in adult education programs. The content, techniques and strategies taught during this four-part training will provide teachers with effective instructional methods for all adult education students, including those with special learning needs. September 25, 2009: DL101: Implementing Distance Learning for Adult Education in Texas will be held from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm. at the Adult Education Center, 1800 Pope Street, Beaumont 77702. Presenter is Renata Russo. Distance education is now an option for adult education and family literacy programs in Texas. Teachers who wish use this approach are required to participate in Distance Learning 101: Teaching Adult Learners at a Distance (DL 101). This course is itself a distance course and is designed to help teachers and administrators develop a distance education plan for an approved curriculum for their program. September 26, 2009: Student Retention for Adult Education will be held from 9 am to 1 pm at La Fuente Learning Center, 758 Springdale Road, Austin 78752. Denise Guckert will facilitate. In this session, we first review research from NSCALL (National Center for Study of Adult Learning and Literacy) on adult student persistence. Participants will apply research to a case study and create a student retention plan of action. We will also review 3 TEAMS reports useful for teachers for tracking student retention.
