October 2, 2009: The Success Trifecta: Collaboration to Stimulate Lifelong Learning Conference will be held at Education Service Center Region 20, 1314 Hines, San Antonio 78208, from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. The cost is $25 and includes materials and lunch. This conference will enhance connections among the Adult Education, Higher Education, and Workforce partners through the sharing of common efforts to foster successful transitions for academic and career achievement in the Alamo area. October 2, 2009: Texas Industry Specific English as a Second Language (TISESL): Employability This training has been cancelled. Please watch the calendar for the most current training information. There will be a general overview of TISESL and training for implementation of the Employability curriculum. The presenter will be Denise Guckert. October 2 & 3, 2009: Effective Instruction for all Adult Education Students including those with Special Learning Needs, Session I of IV, will be held from 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at Navarro College, 3200 W 7th Avenue, One Stop Student Cent Room 108, Corsicana 75110. This training series takes place on the following dates throughout the year. Teachers must attend ALL sessions!

Session I: Oct 2 & 3, 2009, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Session II: Nov 20 & 21, 2009, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Session III: Jan 22 & 23, 2010, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Session IV: March 5 & 6, 2010, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

The multi-session training will assist adult educators understand the needs of adult learners, including those who have learning disabilities and other special learning needs. Participants learn to identify effective instructional practices with all learners, recognize possible learning disabilities, and apply accommodations to assist adult learners with special learning needs to maximize their potential in reaching their goals. October 3, 2009: BEST Plus Training will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (30 minute lunch break) at College of the Mainland, 1200 Amburn Road, LRD Building, Room 279, Texas City 77590. Presenter is Judy Bowman. PLEASE NOTE: Lunch will be provided for COM employees and trainer only. All other attendees should bring a lunch as there is no place close by to go for lunch. The participants will study the rationale for the BEST Plus test and acquire sufficient mastery of the BEST Plus test to perform duties of a tester in administering, scoring, and interpreting the scores. October 3, 2009: DL101: Implementing Distance Learning for Adult Education in Texas – Face to Face will be held from 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm. at the Denver Harbor MSC, 6402 Market Street #225, Houston  77020. Presenter is Angela Johnson. Distance education is now an option for adult education and family literacy programs in Texas. Teachers who wish use this approach are required to participate in Distance Learning 101: Teaching Adult Learners at a Distance (DL 101). This course is itself a distance course and is designed to help teachers and administrators develop a distance education plan for an approved curriculum for their program. October 5-6, 2009: CREATE 2009 Conference - The National Center for Research on the Educational Achievement and Teaching of English Language Learners presents this national conference in Austin on the theme, Improving Outcomes for English Language Learners: Oral Language and Literacy Learning Across the Curriculum. CREATE researchers and other top scholars describe implications of their research on the features of instruction that support English language learners' development across their curricular experience. October 8-9, 2009: 8th Annual Funders’ Forum will be hosted by A Circle of Ten, Inc. at the Brazos Valley Council of Governments on 3991 East 29th Street in Bryan. Participants will learn how to find funding opportunities, gather statistical data to help prepare grant-winning problem statements, and navigate websites for federal and state agencies, private foundations, corporations, and more. October 9, 2009: ESOL Reading Institute: Research-based Strategies for ESOL Reading, Session I of III will be held from 9 AM to 4 PM at Austin Community College, Highland Business Center (HBC), Room #301.7, 5930 Middle Fisksville Road, Austin 78752. Nationally known researcher Dr. Heide Spruck Wrigley will facilitate this Institute that is designed for experienced teachers and will focus on research to practice in teaching reading to second language readers with an emphasis on comprehension strategies for beginning to intermediate level learners. October 9, 2009: Transitioning GED Graduates to Post-Secondary Education will be held from 9:00 am – 12:00 noon at Texas State Technical College (TSTC), Women’s Center, and 3801 Campus Drive, Waco 76705. This workshop will provide Adult Education teachers and administrators a basic framework for thinking about, and planning for successful transitioning of GED graduates to post-secondary education. Participants will identify challenges that GED graduates face to successfully attending and completing college. This session is appropriate and both ESL and GED instructors. October 9 & 10, 2009: ABE/ASE Academy (Session I of IV) will be held from 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. (Friday) and 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. (Saturday) at Austin Community College, Highland Business Center, Room 301.0 on October 9th and Room 103.2 on October 10th, 5930 Middle Fiskville Road, Austin 78752. Ms. Barbara Baird is the facilitator. This Academy is ideal for teachers new to the ABE/ASE classroom as well as experienced teachers who are interested in becoming Master Teachers. ABE/ASE teachers will learn adult learning theory along with brain-based instructional strategies and how to apply them in the classroom. Classroom strategies will cover reading and writing, and teachers will have the opportunity to practice strategies in their classrooms between sessions. The format for this academy begins with an initial 1 1/2 day face-to-face session on October 9 & 10, 2009 followed by three virtual web-based sessions (3 hrs each) on the following Saturdays:

October 10, 2009: Cross Cultural Communication Enhancement Part 2 will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Houston READ Commission Training Center, 6402 Market St, Houston 77020. Presenter: Karen Couey. In this course, participants have opportunities to practice communication skills that include active listening and conflict resolution. Participants will receive a copy of "Making It Work," a workbook on conflict and communication for adult literacy learners. October 10, 2009: ESOL Workforce Academy, Session I of III, will be held from 9 AM to 4 PM at Austin Community College, Highland Business Center, Room 301.2, 5930 Middle Fiskville Road, Austin 78752 Nationally known researchers Dr. Heide Wrigley and Jim Powrie will facilitate this academy where teachers learn how to use scenario-based strategies drawn from the workplace to improve their students' workforce communication skills. October 14, 2009:  Distance Learning 101, Session 1 of 6 will be held from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. at Austin Community College, Highland Business Center, Room 211, 5930 Middle Fisksville Road, Austin  78752.  This training will continue virtually via distance learning through December 16, 2009, for a maximum credit of 12 professional development hours. All other sessions will be non-synchronous (meaning that you do not have to “attend” at a specific time”).  The training is required for programs to offer distance learning classes. October 17, 2009: New Teacher Academy, Session 1 of 4 will be held from 8:30 - 3:30 p.m. at El Paso Community College, El Paso. Room number TBD. Academy will consist of four 1-day workshops, October 17, 2009, December 12, 2009, February 6, 2010 and April 10, 1010. Attendees must participate in all four sessions to be eligible for the training stipend. This academy is targeted to new teachers in the Adult Education field. The facilitator will provide resources to lesson plans, classroom activities and brainstorming sessions that will assist the attendees in exploring new methods to address classroom needs. A mentoring component is included in the academy that will connect an experienced teacher with a novice. As part of the mentoring component, the mentee shall evaluate his/her teaching methods and explore new delivery based on the information presented in the academy's sessions. October 17, 2009: Culture and Learning in the ESOL Classroom, Session I of II will be held from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, in the Arrowhead Room, Navarro College, 3200 West 7th Avenue, Corsicana 75110. This workshop is a 2-part session totaling 9 hours of Professional Development for adult ESOL instructors. This workshop will look at goals of cultural instruction as well as how culture is often learned. There will be hands on activities for teachers to do as they share with each other their own cultural experiences and values, discussing how these are similar to or different from those that their adult learners may hold, and develop strategies to both recognize similarities and bridge differences. October 18-23, 2009: Adult Education and Family Literacy Week. The U.S. House of Representatives declared this one-time only dedicationto raise public awareness of adult education and family literacy. The National Coalition for Literacy has created a resource collection to support efforts to raise awareness and celebrate the week.

October 21, 2009: Statewide Workshop on Federal Grants Management & Opportunities. Houston Community College and College of the Mainland will host a workshop from 9:00 a.m. to noon, featuring Michael Brustein, nationally recognized authority in federal grants management. October 23, 2009: BaFa BaFa will be held from 1-4 pm. at the US Federal Prison, 4550 Hebert Rd, Beaumont 77705. Presenters are Karen Couey & Martin Loa. In this training participants come to understand the powerful effects that culture plays in every person’s life. BaFa BaFa is a simulation activity that helps participants become personally aware of the issues surrounding cultural differences by putting them into one of two created cultures and requiring interaction with the other one. October 24, 2009: Basic Communication Skills for Beginning Literacy ESL Learners will be held from 8:30 am – 3:30 pm at the Houston Community College, Seminar C, 3100 Main Street, Houston, 77002. Presenter is Lilliana Black. Beginning Literacy ESL training introduces the methodology used to develop the Beginning Literacy ESL training module and provides instructors with techniques and strategies to improve the persistence and performance of learners in this lowest level of ESL. Teachers will learn how to promote an environment that enhances persistence and builds community among learners. October 24, 2009: Algebra, Functions, and Patterns will be held from 12:30 pm – 3:30 pm. at the Houston Community College, Room BD21, 3100 Main Street, Houston, 77002. Presenter is Denise Johnson. Algebra, Functions, and Patterns is designed to provide teachers with creative teaching techniques so that they can create and solve algebraic expressions and explain patterns and functional relationships presented in textual, graphical and other forms. The training will include a review on how to create algebraic expressions and equations to model and solve problems; use variables and equations to represent data provided in tables, graphs, and word problems; analyze tables and graphs to generalize patterns and relationships; and understand functional relationships and solve linear, quadratic, and exponential functions. October 29-31: TexTESOL I State Conference - "A Pass to the Future" will be held at the El Paso Convention Center, with a pre-conference session on October 29 at the Camino Real Hotel, El Paso. The Far West GREAT Center has joined forces with TexTESOL 1 and will hold an adult education strand with specific presentations for adult educators. Registration forms are due in by October 8.
