October 2 & 3, 2009: Effective Instruction for all Adult Education Students including those with Special Learning Needs, Session I of IV, will be held from 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at Navarro College, 3200 W 7th Avenue, One Stop Student Cent Room 108, Corsicana 75110. October 3, 2009: BEST Plus Training will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (30 minute lunch break) at College of the Mainland, 1200 Amburn Road, LRD Building, Room 279, Texas City 77590. October 3, 2009: DL101: Implementing Distance Learning for Adult Education in Texas – Face to Face will be held from 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm. at the Denver Harbor MSC, 6402 Market Street #225, Houston 77020. Presenter is Angela Johnson. Distance education is now an option for adult education and family literacy programs in Texas. Teachers who wish use this approach are required to participate in Distance Learning 101: Teaching Adult Learners at a Distance (DL 101). This course is itself a distance course and is designed to help teachers and administrators develop a distance education plan for an approved curriculum for their program. October 5-6, 2009: CREATE 2009 Conference - The National Center for Research on the Educational Achievement and Teaching of English Language Learners presents this national conference in Austin on the theme, Improving Outcomes for English Language Learners: Oral Language and Literacy Learning Across the Curriculum. CREATE researchers and other top scholars describe implications of their research on the features of instruction that support English language learners' development across their curricular experience. October 9 & 10, 2009: ABE/ASE Academy (Session I of IV) will be held from 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. (Friday) and 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. (Saturday) at Austin Community College, Highland Business Center, Room 301.0 on October 9th and Room 103.2 on October 10th, 5930 Middle Fiskville Road, Austin 78752. Ms. Barbara Baird is the facilitator. This Academy is ideal for teachers new to the ABE/ASE classroom as well as experienced teachers who are interested in becoming Master Teachers. ABE/ASE teachers will learn adult learning theory along with brain-based instructional strategies and how to apply them in the classroom. Classroom strategies will cover reading and writing, and teachers will have the opportunity to practice strategies in their classrooms between sessions. The format for this academy begins with an initial 1 1/2 day face-to-face session on October 9 & 10, 2009 followed by three virtual web-based sessions (3 hrs each) on the following Saturdays:

October 14, 2009: Distance Learning 101, Session 1 of 6 will be held from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. at Austin Community College, Highland Business Center, Room 211, 5930 Middle Fisksville Road, Austin 78752. October 17, 2009: New Teacher Academy, Session 1 of 4 will be held from 8:30 - 3:30 p.m. at El Paso Community College, El Paso. Room number TBD. In this training participants come to understand the powerful effects that culture plays in every person’s life. BaFa BaFa is a simulation activity that helps participants become personally aware of the issues surrounding cultural differences by putting them into one of two created cultures and requiring interaction with the other one. This training is intended for anyone who administers or scores the BEST Literacy Test. Using the manual, participants will investigate proper test administration and scoring procedures, practice scoring writing samples, and acquire a basic knowledge of the content. By the end of the session participants should be able to use the writing rubric for scoring writing samples and follow the manual mandates for accurate scoring on the other sections. This training course is for anyone interested in learning more about the Texas Adult Education Content Standards and Benchmarks (TAESB). The main objectives of the training are to familiarize the audience with the TAESB and to develop lesson plans using the standards and benchmarks. Audience members do not need to have previous knowledge of the TAESB, however, they do need to familiar with adult education programs and practices in Texas. Target audience members would include full-time and part-time adult education teachers (ABE,GED, ESL), and adult education program administrators.
