May 1, 2009: VIRTUAL Professional Development Planning Workshop (PDPW ) Part I will be held from 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm. Mary Helen Martinez will facilitate. This session is an orientation to the Texas Adult Education Credential. The workshop will cover steps to enrolling in the Texas Adult Education Teacher Credential, explanation of scoring rubric and how to submit narrative reflections into State electronic database, CredITS (Credential Information Tracking System). This workshop is sponsored by the Central & Coastal Region GREAT Centers. You must register to obtain login information and instructions for attending the virtual session. Virtual participants will submit completed assignments in order to obtain credit for 6 hours of the PDPW Part I and II. May 1-2, 2009: Project Based Learning Academy - Session 3: This session is titled “How to Support and Evaluate Student-generated Group Projects” and will be held on Friday from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This is the last of three sessions (follow-up scheduled: 5/29). Attendees must participate in all three sessions and the follow-up to be eligible for the stipend. The training location is Socorro CLC, 313 S. Rio Vista, El Paso. May 7 & 8, 2009: Talk, Read, Play and Sing, an Even Start Interactive Literacy Activities Institute will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at Lone Star College Cy Fair, 9191 Barker Cypress, TECH 102, Cypress 77433. Presenter is Deborah Stedman. ILA can be a challenging component for Even Start. This institute will be a hands-on, interactive and fun experience where we will explore strategies for keeping ILA research-based and enjoyable for mom and child. We will also discover strategies for integration ILA into home visits, parent education and adult education. Even Start Teachers will receive free children’s books to use in the classroom. May 8, 2009: Student Retention for Adult Education will be held from 4:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. at the La Fuente Learning Center, 758 Springdale Road, Austin, 78702-4037. The presenter is Denise Guckert. In this session, we first review research from NSCALL (National Center for the Study of Adult Learning and Literacy) on adult student persistence. Initial findings outline four supports and many strategies that teachers and programs can put in place to increase adult student persistence. Participants will apply the model to a case study and then create a personal retention plan to address student motivation and retention in their own programs or classes. SPACE IS LIMITED! May 8-9, 2009: ABE/GED Academy: Surrounded by Math and Science, Session 3. This session is titled “It’s Everywhere! Resources for the ABE/GED Classroom” and will help you learn how to incorporate science into your math classroom through hands-on activities. The session will be held on Friday from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and will take place at Socorro CLC, 313 S. Rio Vista, El Paso. May 15th & 16th, 2009: Bridges to Practice Learning Disabilities Training will be held on Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm and Saturday, 8:00am - 4:00pm at the United Way of Tarrant County, 1500 N. Main, Fort Worth 76106. The literacy collaboration of Literacy Texas, United Way of Tarrant County, and the Literacy Volunteer Training Initiative of TCALL is bringing the Bridges to Practice Learning Disabilities training to Fort Worth. This is an in-depth workshop that focuses on equipping adult education programs and their partners to meet the challenges of adults with learning disabilities. The training covers legal issues, assessment, diagnosis, goal setting, case management/teaching methods, and much more. Each participant will earn a certificate of completion for Bridges to Practice Learning Disabilities Training. Attendance is mandatory for both days (no partial credit for partial attendance). There is no charge to participants. *Free parking in back.

May 18, 2009: Transitions Summit. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) will host this summit in Round Top from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to discuss issues regarding the transition of adult basic education students to postsecondary education. Purpose of the Summit is to identify current practices in transitions within your local program that assist ABE, ESL, and ASE students enroll into postsecondary education. We will briefly discuss BEST Literacy administration and then focus on increasing scoring accuracy for the remainder of the session.
