March 2, 2008: BEST Plus Refresher Workshop will be held from 6:00 - 9:00p.m. at the Adult Learning Center, 3902 Morgan, Corpus Christi 78404. The instructor is Yvette Ortiz Training has been cancelled.

March 2, 2009: BEST Literacy will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at College of the Mainland, 11200 Amburn Rd, Texas City 77590. Presenter is Judy Bowman. This training is intended for anyone who administers or scores the BEST Literacy Test. Participants will investigate proper test administration and scoring procedures, practice scoring writing samples, and acquire a basic knowledge of the content. By the end of the session participants should be able to use the writing rubric for scoring writing samples and follow the mandates for accurate scoring on the other sections. March 5, 2009: Student Retention for Adult Education will be held from 6:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. at Baker Center Cafeteria, 3908 Avenue B, Austin 78751. The presenter is Denise Guckert. In this session, we first review research from NSCALL (National Center for the Study of Adult Learning and Literacy) on adult student persistence. Initial findings outline four supports and an many strategies that teachers and programs can put in place to increase adult student persistence. Participants will apply the model to a case study and then create a personal retention plan to address student motivation and retention in their own programs or classes. March 6, 2009: Professional Development Planning Workshop (PDPW) will be held from 9:00 am – 4:00 p.m. at Austin Community College, Highland Business Center (HBC), Room #220, 5930 Middle Fiskville Road, Austin 78752. Mary Helen Martinez will facilitate. This session is an orientation to the Texas Adult Education Credential. The workshop will cover steps to enrolling in the Texas Adult Education Teacher Credential, explanation of scoring rubric and how to submit narrative reflections into State electronic database, CredITS (Credential Information Tracking System) This workshop is sponsored by the Central Region GREAT Center. This session provides basic TEAMS training to familiarize users with the procedure for accessing the Texas Educating Adults Management System, entering and editing data, and printing reports for the analysis of data. This Professional Development session is intended for administrators and experienced data entry staff who are current TEAMS users. The focus is on accessing, understanding, and applying information collected and processed through the Texas Educating Adults Management System (TEAMS) for program improvement. This training is designed to prepare participants to help their students develop basic health literacy skills.  The session is filled with interactive activities that will help participants define lessons they might develop.  Attendees will have an opportunity to examine a sample lesson plan and plan a lesson. March 7, 2009: Using Storyboards to Identify Valuable Work Skills will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 Noon, at the United Way Center 50 Waugh Dr., Houston 77007. Presenter is Audrey Nelson-Ricks. This training demonstrates strategies teachers can use to guide adult learners through a storyboarding process that creates awareness of strengths and skills drawn from life experiences. March 7, 2009: More from Students, Less from Teachers will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 Noon at the United Way Center, 50 Waugh Dr., Houston 77007. Presenter is Jeff Mohamed. In this session teachers will experience hands-on, interactive tasks designed to actively engage students in the learning process. The strategies presented will increase students’ interest in and retention of material learned. This professional development session introduces teachers to Readers Theater as an interactive tool that can be used in the ABE/GED/ASE classroom to explore a diverse range of topics, i.e., cultural topics, historical events and contexts, social conflicts, news, and contemporary issues and in the ESL classroom to improve reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. March 7, 2009: Using TEAMS for Program Improvement for will be held from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Central Texas College, Building 152 (Planetarium), Room 147, 6200 West Central Texas Expressway, Killeen 76541. March 11 & 12, 2009: Bridges to Practice Learning Disabilities Training will be held Wednesday, 8:00am - 5:00pm and Thursday, 8:00am - 4:00pm at Center for Community Cooperation, Trinity Room, 2900 Live Oak Dallas, Texas 75204. The literacy collaboration of Literacy Texas, the Wilkinson Center, and the Literacy Volunteer Training Initiative of TCALL is bringing the Bridges to Practice Learning Disabilities training to Dallas, Texas. This is an in-depth workshop that focuses on equipping adult education/literacy programs and their partners to meet the challenges of working with adults who are diagnosed or undiagnosed learning disabled. The training covers legal issues, assessment, diagnosis, goal setting, case management/teaching methods, and much more. Each participant will earn a certificate of completion for Bridges to Practice Learning Disabilities Training. Attendance is mandatory for both days (no partial credit for partial attendance). March 26-28, 2009: Parents Make the Difference: The Sequel is hosted by the Texas Family Literacy Resource Center. This two-day event will be held in San Marcos for Even Start Family Literacy programs on Thursday, March 26 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Friday, March 27 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Texas State University - San Marcos. This will be the only date and location at which TFLRC will present this initiative. Registration is required by March 13. March 27, 2009: TEAMS: Data Detective will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, at the Houston READ Commission Training Center, 6402 Market Street, Houston 77020. Presenter is Kay Brooks. Data Detective training was developed by Texas LEARNS to provide technical assistance to Texas adult education programs. Helping programs understand how to utilize the data in TEAMS Reports to accurately and effectively assess students and to improve program performance has become a priority in the State. It is Texas LEARNS’ goal that Adult Education Program directors and staff become comfortable enough using TEAMS Report data that they will become Data Detectives. This training is divided into four sections. In each section, participants will follow along as the trainer presents material in the power point and in the handouts. At the end of each section, it is the participants turn to become Data Detectives by completing the activities. March 27, 2009: Developing Data and Graph Literacy will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, at the Houston READ Commission Training Center, 6402 Market Street, Houston 77020. Developing Data and Graph Literacy is designed to provide teachers with basic but creative teaching techniques to assist ABE/GED students with the capacity to interpret and use data, present in a different format, solve problems, or make predictions. Teachers will be refreshed in the following subject areas: (1) understanding statistical concepts; (2) constructing, interpreting, and comparing tables, charts, and graphs of statistical data; and (3) comparing and contrasting data sets and making predictions based on probabilities. March 27-28, 2009: ABE/GED Academy: Surrounded by Math and Science, Session 2. This session is titled “Health Literacy” and will provide you with lessons that will help your students improve their health literacy levels and provide practice using basic skills in mathematics. The session will be held on Friday from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and will take place at Socorro CLC, 313 S. Rio Vista, El Paso. This is the second of three sessions (5/8-9). There is one follow-up session scheduled for this academy: June 5.
