June 4-7, 2008: The 49th Annual Adult Education Research Conference will be held at The University of Missouri – St. Louis. Pre-Conferences will be June 4, with the conference proper on June 5-7. For more information, see the 49th Annual Adult Education Research Conference Web page.

June 5 and 6, 2008: Project GREAT and State Leadership Quarterly Meeting will be held at TCALL in Bryan/College Station from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on these two days. (Meeting may be adjusted to a single day, depending on agenda.)

June 7, 2008: TABE 9 & 10 will be held from 9:00 a.m. to Noon, at Harris County Department of Education, Irvington Learning Center, 626 Lindale, Houston 77022. Presenter is Bill Medina. This training will provide the CTB/McGraw-Hill certification requirements on the best practices of administering, scoring, and interpreting the TABE 9/10. June 7, 2008: Texas Adult Education Content Standards Training will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at Harris County Department of Education, Irvington Learning Center, 626 Lindale, Houston 77022. Presenter is: Melanie Mayeaux. This training course is for anyone interested in learning more about the Texas Adult Education Content Standards and Benchmarks (TAESB). The main objectives of the training are to familiarize the audience with the TAESB and to develop lesson plans using the standards and benchmarks. Audience members do not need to have previous knowledge of the TAESB, however, they do need to familiar with adult education programs and practices in Texas. Target audience members would include full-time and part-time adult education teachers (ABE, GED and ESL), and adult education program administrators. June 17, 2008: Community Service and Volunteering: Learning Through Character and Civic Development. This free broadcast from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Central Time is part of the U.S. Department of Education “Education News Parents Can Use” television series about ways to ensure children's educational success. Satellite coordinates for each broadcast are provided free of charge to all broadcast stations and outlets but requires pre-registration for the 2007-2008 season at http://registerevent.ed.gov.

This session is designed to help teachers integrate free online templates for Microsoft® Word, Excel® spreadsheet software, PowerPoint® presentation graphics program, and Publisher into their lesson plans. June 17, 2008: Data Detective will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Houston Community College, 3100 Main St, Houston 77002. Presenters are Kay Brooks and Brenda Forrest. Data Detective training was developed by Texas LEARNS to provide technical assistance to Texas Adult Education programs. The training is designed to help programs understand the National Reporting System (NRS) and Federal and State Performance Measures; to improve data integrity and date accuracy, to analyze TEAMS Report – Participant Roster by Class; and to develop strategies for program improvement. June 17 - 18, 2008: ESL Reading Academy -Explore a variety of hands-on strategies designed to improve your beginning and intermediate level ESL student's ability to read with comprehension. Try some of these research-based strategies out in your classroom and develop a customized reading strategy that works for your students. Share your experience in implementing new reading strategies with other practitioners and learn from them as well. Come join the fun! June 19, 2008: National Community College Transitions Symposium Webcast. With a focus on improving student transitions, the U.S. Department of Education Office of Vocational and Adult Education will convene this symposium, which may be viewed live online from this page on Thursday June 19 between 8:00 am and 11:30 pm and from 1:00 to 3:30 pm. Central Time. Noted panelists will describe practices that appear to improve student transitions and offer strategies for building a better understanding of how to create successful student transitions. Full video footage of the proceedings will also be archived for later viewing, and a written summary of the proceedings will be posted on the site by July 31.

June 23, 2008: Distance Learning 101 will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 pm via phone conference and Internet interface.  This course is a 6 week session requiring weekly readings and assignments with a cumulative Distance Learning plan for your program. Each curriculum you plan to offer at your program will need separate assignments and distance learning plans. At least one administrator (director or coordinator) must attend with at least one teacher. This course is required for programs and teachers wanting to set up Distance Learning classes. June 24 - 25 , 2008: Classroom Management Institute: Multilevel ESL Instruction - This workshop will model effective multilevel lesson planning and grouping strategies based on Texas' new ESL Content Standards. At the end of the workshop, teachers will be asked to develop and implement their own multilevel lesson plan in their classrooms. Come and join us and be prepared to try new activities and strategies. Training sessions will be from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on both days. Location is yet to be determined.
