January 10, 2009: Building an Adult Reader will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at HCDE, Irvington Center, 626 Lindale, Houston, 77022. Presenter is Stacy Shultz. This course will target those instructors of reading for Adult Basic Education. Throughout the training participants will learn the six foundations of reading. (i.e. phonemic awareness, phonological awareness, decoding skill, fluency, vocabulary development, comprehension, and motivation). The participants will learn the meanings of the foundations and ways to implement their new found knowledge with activities for adult learners. Each foundation will be explored and authentic activities will be provided. Participants will leave with a knowledge of the foundations of reading and how to apply them in their direct reading instruction. January 14 and 15, 2009: ESOL Reading Academy - Research-based Strategies for ESOL Reading, (Sessions I & 2) will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in Room Seminar B at HCCS – 3100 Main Street, Houston 77002. Nationally known researcher Dr. Heide Spruck Wrigley will facilitate this Institute that is designed for experienced teachers and will focus on research to practice in teaching reading to second language readers with a special focus on comprehension strategies for intermediate level learners. Participants will explore the types of learning experiences that are most likely to promote reading proficiency and will make connections between the ideas presented in the workshop and their own practice. This Professional Development opportunity is ideal for experienced teachers who are interested in becoming Master Teachers. January 16th and 17th, 2009: Beyond our Borders Workshop will be held on Friday from 6:00-9:00 pm & on Saturday from 8:30 am-5:00 pm at Baylor University School of Social Work, Speight Plaza Building, Room 104, 1521 South 4th Street, Waco 76798. The BEYOND OUR BORDERS workshop prepares short-term volunteers to use Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) as a tool for building relationships as a vehicle of church outreach. It models an approach that is interactive, task-based and learner-centered. Training combines process and content by employing 35 teaching techniques in the presentation of the basics for communicative language teaching and learning. Participants learn to create culturally appropriate lessons related to students' needs and interests in settings that permit the use of religious text and those that do not. January 16th and 17th, 2009: Training of Trainers Principles of Participatory Education will be held from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at Shepherd Drive Fellowship, 600 Shepherd Dr. in Houston 77007. Literacy Texas is providing an opportunity for an adult literacy/adult education Training of Trainers workshop. The goal of this workshop is to give teachers/literacy tutors, who have some experience working with adult students, the skills and techniques needed to provide quality training for their organization. When you receive your certification from this workshop, you will be certified to train those who work with adult education/literacy students. This workshop is designed to teach prospective trainers how to use the principles of participatory adult education. It does not attempt to teach the content of any specific training. As an adult education/literacy provider you already know the content of the training used in your program(s). Through this training you will review the philosophies of participatory adult education and improve your performance of techniques and drills. The Basic Literacy and ESL Trainers Guides that drive your programs' training will give you the content and instructions for conducting your own training/in-service. This training is free of charge to participants. Even if you are not directly involved with literacy/education as a trained tutor/teacher, you are invited to join us at this training to improve your trainer skills and techniques to expand your abilities to work with your organization, and network with other trainers. January 23rd & 24th, 2009: Bridges to Practice Learning Disabilities Training will be provided in Victoria as a collaboration of collaboration of TCALL, Literacy Texas, Victoria Adult Literacy Council, and Victoria College Adult Education Center.
