February  3, 2009: Central GREAT Advisory Committee Meeting will be held virtually from 10 AM to 12 Noon via Connect and telephone conference call. February 6-7, 2009: Project Based Learning Academy - Session 1: This academy will introduce the principles and practice of project based learning.  We will start with teacher-led mini-projects and then move on to student-generated group projects.  Teachers will learn how to use the Internet, digital pictures and video to help students create community research projects.  This session is titled “Principles of cooperative learning and project-based learning” and will be held on Friday from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This is the first of three sessions (remaining sessions: 3/13-14, 5/1-2). February 6-7, 2009: COABE/ProLiteracy Southwest Regional Institute will be held in Phoenix, Arizona. In this intensive professional development opportunity, participants can choose from one of three content areas. The first two areas, health literacy and math, will be a full day on February 6. February 7, 2009: ABE/ASE Academy (Session III of V) will be held virtually from 10 AM - 1 PM. Ms. Barbara Baird will facilitate. This academy began with an initial 2 day face-to-face session on November 7 & 8, 2008. The Academy provides ABE/ASE teachers with adult learning theory including brain-based instructional strategies and how to apply them in the classroom. Various classroom strategies are introduced covering reading, writing and math, and teachers have the opportunity to practice strategies in their classrooms between sessions. This session is the second of 3 virtual follow-up sessions. One more virtual web-based sessions (3 hrs) will follow on April 18, 2009. February 9, 2009: Using Coaching Strategies to Effectively Conduct Teacher Observations will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., at Harris County Department of Education, 6515 Irvington, Houston 77022. Presenter is Rene Coronado. The presenter will cover strategies that can be used by supervisors/administrators, instructional leaders before, during and after a teacher observation in order to help teachers improve their effectiveness. The training will emphasize the planning of lessons and increasing a teacher’s reflective thinking by using effective questioning strategies before and after a lesson (during a Coach’s conference w/the Teacher). February 14, 2009: Developing Data and Graph Literacy will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the TALAE Conference 2009, 9515 Hotel Drive, Austin 78719. Presenter is Denise Johnson. Developing Data and Graph Literacy is designed to provide teachers with basic but creative teaching techniques to assist ABE/GED students with the capacity to interpret and use data, present in a different format, solve problems, or make predictions. Teachers will be refreshed in the following subject areas: (1) understanding statistical concepts; (2) constructing, interpreting, and comparing tables, charts, and graphs of statistical data; and (3) comparing and contrasting data sets and making predictions based on probabilities. February 19, 2009: Brain Research: Enhance/Energize Instruction will be held from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm, at Lone Star College Cy Fair, 9191 Barker Cypress RM CC 151, Cypress  77433. Presenter is Dr. Janet Zadina. This lively presentation, peppered with humor, music, and audience participation, engages and empowers educators. Take a tour of a real brain via MRI brain scan and see how multiple pathways are involved in learning. This training is intended for teachers, administrators and other adult education staff involved with but not actually administering BEST Plus. February 20-21, 2009: EL Civics Institute will be held in Laredo from 9:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m., Friday, February 20 and 9:00 am. - 3:00 p.m., Saturday, February 21, 2009. This workshop, conducted by Dr. Heide Wrigley, will focus on activities that link classrooms and communities. There will be a technology component where teachers will be able to do a hands-on activity on laptop computers. February 21, 2009: Data Detective: TEAMS for Teachers will be held from 9:30 am – 2 pm at La Fuente, 758 Springdale Road , Austin, 78702-4037. This workshop is designed to help adult educators understand how to utilize the data in TEAMS Reports to track student progress and ultimately to improve program performance. In this session, participants will learn how the National Reporting System creates educational levels and review the federally approved adult education performance measures that programs must meet. They will analyze the TEAMS Participant Roster report to discover the relationships between retention and performance and the importance of correct progress assessment. Finally, they will strategize to ensure that their program is performing timely assessments, getting accurately student data into TEAMS, and distributing TEAMS reports back to the teachers.   February 25-27, 2009: You Make the Difference. This training in Austin is based on The Hanen Centre's curriculum, "You Make the Difference," which focuses on promoting purposeful communication in parent & child interactions. February 27, 2009: ESOL Workforce Academy (Session III of IV) will be held from 9 AM to 4 PM in Austin, site: TBA. You must have attended Sessions I & II in their entirety in order to be eligible to attend Session III Nationally known researchers Dr. Heide Wrigley and Jim Powrie will facilitate this academy where teachers learn how to use scenario-based strategies drawn from the workplace to improve their students’ ESL workforce communication skills. Participants will also receive materials that focus on communication and literacy skills for work that can be integrated with and supplement instruction in the conventional ESL classroom. February 27-28, 2009: ABE/GED Academy: Surrounded by Math and Science, Session 1. This session is titled “Forces Behind the Weather” and will provide you with lessons that integrate mathematical measurements, map reading, graphics and the world of earth science. The session will be held on Friday from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and will take place at Socorro CLC, 313 S. Rio Vista, El Paso. February 28, 2009: ESOL Academy I: Techniques for Teaching Adult ESOL (Session III of IV) You must have attended the previous two sessions to attend Session III. Academy will be held from 9 AM to 4 PM at Austin Community College, 5930 Middle Fiskville Road, Austin 78751, Room 411. This twenty-four (24) hour course, held over four Saturdays - and led by Dr. Heide Wrigley - is for ESOL teachers who want to “beef up” their everyday teaching skills and for newer teachers of Adult ESOL. You will learn about and practice developing new strategies, activities, and lessons that will support your students’ learning. This workshop will let you increase your repertoire of skills and make it easier to make informed decisions about what to teach and why. After participation in the Academy and engagement with the ideas presented, you will know why some activities and approaches are more effective than others in fostering second language acquisition and promoting deeper learning. This training course is for anyone interested in learning more about the Texas Adult Education Content Standards and Benchmarks (TAESB). The main objectives of the training are to familiarize the audience with the TAESB and to develop lesson plans using the standards and benchmarks. Audience members do not need to have previous knowledge of the TAESB, however, they do need to familiar with adult education programs and practices in Texas. Target audience members would include full-time and part-time adult education teachers (ABE/ASE, ESL), and adult education program administrators. February 28, 2009: TEAMS: Data Detective will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., at Lone Star College – Greenspoint, 250 N Sam Houston Pkwy E, Room 303, Houston 77060. Presenter is Kay Brooks. Data Detective training was developed by Texas LEARNS to provide technical assistance to Texas adult education programs. Helping programs understand how to utilize the data in TEAMS Reports to accurately and effectively assess students and to improve program performance has become a priority in the State. It is Texas LEARNS’ goal that Adult Education Program directors and staff become comfortable enough using TEAMS Report data that they will become Data Detectives. This training is divided into four sections. In each section, participants will follow along as the trainer presents material in the power point and in the handouts. At the end of each section, it is the participants turn to become Data Detectives by completing the activities.
