November 1, 2008: Culture and Learning in the ESOL Classroom, Session III of III will be held from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm, at Pleasant Hill Branch Library, 211 East William Cannon, Drive Austin 78745. You must have attended Sessions 1 & II in their entirety in order to be eligible to attend Session III. This workshop is a 3-part session totaling 9 hours of Professional Development for adult ESOL instructors. This workshop will look at goals of cultural instruction as well as how culture is often learned. There will be hands on activities for teachers to do as they share with each other their own cultural experiences and values, discussing how these are similar to or different from those that their adult learners may hold, and develop strategies to both recognize similarities and bridge differences. November 1, 2008: New Teacher Academy - Session 1: This academy is targeted to new teachers in the Adult Education field. The facilitator will provide resources to lesson plans, classroom activities, and brainstorming sessions that will assist the attendees in exploring new methods to address classroom needs. A mentoring component is included in the academy that will connect an experienced teacher with a novice. As part of the mentoring component, the mentee shall evaluate his/her own teaching methods and explore new delivery based on the information presented in the academy's sessions. Presentation of the modifications made will be presented during the last session. Training sessions will be from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and will take place at El Paso Community College - Valle Verde Campus (room to be announced at a later date). This is the first of four sessions (remaining sessions: 12/6, 1/17, 3/7). Attendees must participate in all four sessions and the mentoring component to be eligible for the stipend. November 1, 2008: Retention for Adult Education will be held from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Central Texas College, Building 152 (Planetarium), Room 101, 6200 West Central TX Expressway, Killeen, 76541. November 1 and 8, 2008: Training of Trainers: Principles of Participatory Education will be hosted by the East Region GREAT Center at Trinity Valley Community College, 500 S. Prairieville St., Liberal Arts Building, Room LA102, Athens. The two-day event (8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. November 1 and 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on November 8) is intended to give teachers/literacy tutors, who have some experience working adult students, training in using the principles of participatory adult education in their training activities. Upon completion, participants receive certification to provide quality training for their organization. This Training of Trainers is a two-day workshop. The Academy will provide ABE/ASE teachers with adult learning theory including brain-based instructional strategies and how to apply them in the classroom. Various classroom strategies will be introduced covering reading, writing and math, and teachers will have the opportunity to practice strategies in their classrooms between sessions. This Academy is ideal for teachers new to the ABE/ASE classroom as well as experienced teachers who are interested in becoming Master Teachers. November 14-15, 2008: GED Academy: Integrating Technology into Content Areas- Session 1 - Are you ready to take instruction to a whole new level? Are you ready to take advantage of all that technology has to offer? This series is designed to put excitement in your classroom and expand your definition of technology in the classroom. From wikis to blogs to commercials to videos and from cell phones to calculators to audio clips and YouTube, learn the ins and outs, the ups and downs of technology and how it can change you, your classroom, and your students. This workshop is designed for teachers of ABE, Pre-GED, and GED-level students. This session will focus on Connecting to Fun. Training sessions will be from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Friday and from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. The training will take place at Socorro ISD - District Service Center at 12440 Rojas Dr. This is the first of three sessions (remaining sessions: 12/12-13, 1/23-24). November 15, 2008: ESOL Reading Institute: Research-based Strategies for ESOL Reading, Session I of III will be held from 9 AM to 4 PM at Austin Community College-Highland Business Center Room #103.2, 5930 Middle Fiskville Road, Austin 78752.Nationally known researcher Dr. Heide Spruck Wrigley will facilitate this Institute that is designed for experienced teachers and will focus on research to practice in teaching reading to second language readers with a special focus on comprehension strategies for intermediate level learners. November 21, 2008: Using Newspaper Ads to Teach Adults Math will be held from 2:10 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., at the EPALL 2008 Conference, University of Texas – El Paso, Union Building (3rd Floor – Ray Room), 500 W University Ave, El Paso. Presenter is Audrey Nelson-Ricks. Teachers will use newspaper ads to create math lessons and activities for situations that adult learners encounter in all aspects of their lives—grocery shopping, budgeting, shopping for clothes and household items, shopping for cars, using coupons, shopping for their children’s school supplies and clothes, etc. Using actual newspaper resources instead of just problems from a text add a reality dimension to the math class and will increase student interest and motivation. November 22, 2008: BEST Plus Scoring Refresher Toolkit will be held from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm, at Lone Star College-Greenspoint, 250 N Sam Houston Pkwy E Ste 306, Houston 77060. Presenter is Bill Medina. This training is designed to recalibrate approved BEST Plus test administrators. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on their own strengths and weaknesses regarding administration and accurate scoring of the BEST Plus. Participants will practice using the scoring rubric to provide justification for scoring each of the three language aspects. After practice, participants will complete a BEST Plus scoring calibration assessment. Each participant must bring his/her own TAG (Test Administrator’s Guide) and their own Scoring Refresher Workbook. Please note: This session will be limited to 15 participants when the test will be administered as part of the training. November 22, 2008: BEST Literacy Training will be held from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm, at Lone Star College-Greenspoint, 250 N Sam Houston Pkwy E Ste 306, Houston 77060. Presenter is Bill Medina. This training is intended for anyone who administers or scores the BEST Literacy Test. Using the manual, participants will investigate proper test administration and scoring procedures, practice scoring writing samples, and acquire a basic knowledge of the content. By the end of the session participants should be able to use the writing rubric for scoring writing samples and follow the manual mandates for accurate scoring on the other sections. November 24, 2008: BEST Plus for Non-Testers will be held from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm, at Lone Star College-Greenspoint, 250 N Sam Houston Pkwy E Ste 312, Houston 77060. Presenter is Jill Kaeser.
