August 1, 2009: BEST Plus Refresher Toolkit will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Lone Star College North Harris,250 N. Sam Houston PKWY E., Greenspoint Center Room 306, Houston, 77060. Presenter is Jill Kaeser. This training is designed to recalibrate approved BEST Plus test administrators. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on their own strengths and weaknesses regarding administration and accurate scoring of the BEST Plus. Participants will practice using the scoring rubric to provide justification for scoring each of the three language aspects. After practice, participants will complete a BEST Plus scoring calibration assessment. Each participant must bring his/her own TAG (Test Administrator’s Guide) and their own Scoring Refresher Workbook. August 8, 2009:: DL 101: Implementing Distance Learning for Adult Education in Texas will be held from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. at College of the Mainland, 1200 Amburn Road, Texas City,. Presenter is Renata Russo. Distance education is now an option for adult education and family literacy programs in Texas. Teachers who wish use this approach are required to participate in Distance Learning 101: Teaching Adult Learners at a Distance (DL 101). This course is itself a distance course and is designed to help teachers and administrators develop a distance education plan for an approved curriculum for their program. August 8, 2009: BEST Literacy will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Harris County Department of Education Irvington Center, 626 Lindale, Houston 77022. Presenter: Bill Medina. This training is intended for anyone who administers or scores the BEST Literacy Test. Using the manual, participants will investigate proper test administration and scoring procedures, practice scoring writing samples, and acquire a basic knowledge of the content. By the end of the session participants should be able to use the writing rubric for scoring writing samples and follow the manual mandates for accurate scoring on the other sections. August 10-12, 2009: Workforce Literacy Summit. This event will have theme of "Putting Workforce Literacy Innovation to Work: A Call to Action for Economic & Green Development". Topics will include: Partnerships & Strategic Planning; Funding & Sustainability; and Program & Delivery. August 14, 2009: Credential Training will be held from 8:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Computer Lab of the Socorro District Service Center, 12440 Rojas Dr., El Paso. The Far West GREAT Center and the Credential Project are providing a unique Professional Development opportunity for teachers who have enrolled in the Teacher Credential. In order to participate, teachers must 1) Be enrolled in the Credential, 2) have a CredITS username and password, and 3) have been "assigned" in CredITS by their local administrator.

The purpose of this full-day (6 hrs) PD opportunity is to provide guidance to teachers as they write and submit a reflection in CredITS. This is a great opportunity for hands-on practice with writing and posting reflections. The co-presenters, Brenda Dunlap and Debbie Janysek, have been providing this training individually for the past two years and at our request, have agreed to travel to each GREAT Region this summer. Additionally, Brenda and Debbie have earned both the Teacher Credential and the Administrator Credential so they are uniquely qualified to offer this training. August 21, 2009: Algebra, Functions, and Patterns  will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Houston READ Commission Training Center, 6402 Market St, Houston 77020. Presenter: Denise Johnson. Algebra, Functions, and Patterns is designed to provide teachers with creative teaching techniques so that they can create and solve algebraic expressions and explain patterns and functional relationships presented in textual, graphical and other forms. The training will include a review on how to create algebraic expressions and equations to model and solve problems; use variables and equations to represent data provided in tables, graphs, and word problems; analyze tables and graphs to generalize patterns and relationships; and understand functional relationships and solve linear, quadratic, and exponential functions. August 28, 2009: Reflective Practice and the Credential:  Writing to Meet the Performance Requirements in the Credential Reflection Scoring  Rubric  will be held from 9 AM - 4 PM. at the Kyle Learning Center, 21393 I-H 35 North, Kyle  78640.  The presenter is Debbie Janysek. This workshop will provide teachers pursuing the Teacher Credential with hands-on experience writing reflections using the scoring rubric and navigating CredITS.  The training will consist of a detailed overview of the Credential Reflection Scoring Rubric requirements and guidance on how to write reflections that meet the performance requirements of the rubric.   Presenters will assist training participants as they begin to write a reflection for submission in the Credential Information Tracking System (CredITS).  Participants will be provided with a brief overview of CredITS and will submit at least one reflection during the session.  For information on directions or other logistics contact Denise Guckert dg21@txstate.edu, or toll free 1-877-798-5522. August 28, 2009: Note-taking and Critical Reading Skills: Exploring Careers and the College System, Follow-up Session: During this session, attendees will discuss lessons learned and their completed assignments. The session will be from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at El Paso Community College, Administrative Service Center, 9050 Viscount, Building B, Room B322. Attendees must participate in the entire 2-day workshop and the follow-up to be eligible for the stipend.

August 29, 2009: Effective Multi-level Strategies for Adult ESL Learners (Module 3) will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Brazosport College’s Community Education Center, 120 Circle Way, Suite 2A, Lake Jackson, 77566. Presenter is Audrey Nelson-Ricks. This interactive training focuses on appropriate lesson planning strategies, group strategies, and effective multi-level activities. It includes theory and strategies to use in teaching listening, speaking, reading, and writing to a multi-level class. Classroom management techniques, test preparation, orientation procedures, multi-sensory lesson planning, and proficiency objectives of the Texas Content standards will be presented. Modules are sequential, but can be presented in three separate trainings. It is recommended that the training be conducted on two separate days: Day One three hours (Module One) and Day Two six hours (Modules Two and Three).
