August 1, 2008: BEST Plus Training will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at College of the Mainland, 1200 Amburn Rd, Texas City 75590. Presenter is Judy Bowman. The participants will study the rationale for the BEST Plus test and acquire sufficient mastery of the BEST Plus test to perform duties of a tester in administering, scoring, and interpreting the scores. NOTE: Participants are required to have a TAG manual. No one will be allowed to attend the session without a TAG manual. August 4-5, 2008: Literacy Texas 7th Annual Conference Formerly known as TAALC (Texas Association of Adult Literacy Councils), this organization's annual conference will be held in Austin at the Austin Marriott South Hotel. August 5, 2008: Using Multimedia to Practice ESL will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., at Region 4 ESC, 7145 W Tidwell, Houston 77092. Presenter is Audrey Nelson-Ricks This training course is designed to train teachers to use multimedia in the classroom. Teachers will model the use of music, radio, TV, videos, movies, and newspapers in creative classroom activities then will assign homework activities to their ESL students to practice English through multimedia available to them in their own homes. The students will increase their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills through the use of multimedia in the classroom and at home. August 5, 2008: Using Storyboards to Identify Valuable Work Skills will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., at Region 4 ESC, 7145 W Tidwell, Houston 77092. Presenter is Audrey Nelson-Ricks. This training demonstrates strategies teachers can use to guide adult learners through a storyboarding process that creates awareness of strengths and skills drawn from life experiences. August 5, 2008: EL Civics Curriculum and Content Standards will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., at Region 4 ESC, 7145 W Tidwell, and Houston 77092. Presenter is Doris Larry. The purpose of this training session is to provide strategies for developing and modeling developed lessons using the ESL Content Standards. The development shows how the Content Standards are the primary focus for planning ESL lessons. In addition to the base planning, EL Civics is integrated into the lessons to meet grant requirements. August 5, 2008: Number Sense and Operations will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., at Region 4 ESC, 7145 W Tidwell, and Houston 77092. Presenter is Denise Johnson. This course is designed to provide teachers with creative teaching techniques of basic math terminology and the ability to solve math expressions or equations, either in isolation or as a step in a complex, multi-step problem. Teachers will be refreshed in the following subjected areas: (1) Demonstrating numeric understanding, (2) Performing math operations, (3) Analyzing and applying percentages, ratios, proportions, and (4) Estimating to solve problems and assess possible solutions. August 8, 2008: More from Students, Less from Teachers will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Houston Community College, 3100 Main St, Houston 77002. Presenter is Jeff Mohamed. In this session teachers will experience hands-on, interactive tasks designed to actively engage students in the learning process. The strategies presented will increase students’ interest in and retention of material learned. Originally developed for ESL teachers, this training offers strategies that can be adapted for ABE and GED students. Handouts will be given. August 9, 2008: Texas Adult Education Content Standards Training will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at the Lone Star College–Greenspoint Center, 250 N Sam Houston Pkwy E Room 306, Houston 77060. Presenter is Doris Larry. This training course is for anyone interested in learning more about the Texas Adult Education Content Standards and Benchmarks (TAESB). The main objectives of the training are to familiarize the audience with the TAESB and to develop lesson plans using the standards and benchmarks. Audience members do not need to have previous knowledge of the TAESB, however, they do need to familiar with adult education programs and practices in Texas. Target audience members would include full-time and part-time adult education teachers (ABE, GED and ESL), and adult education program administrators. August 14, 2008: Web Conference for Even Start & EL Civics will be hosted by Texas LEARNS from 1-2 PM Central Time. The purpose of the web conference is to discuss recent changes in BEST Literacy NRS Educational Functioning Levels and changes in TEAMS. The changes in BEST Literacy Score Ranges are likely to cause the Domain of Significance for returning students to go backwards. Additionally, upcoming changes in TEAMS [Texas Educating Adults Management System] may affect student baselines and Domain of Significance. Training provides participants with creative methodology for use of newspapers in the ESL classroom. Participants will develop a story bank and a picture bank.
