January 8, 2010: ABE/ASE Educator Academy Learning Circle (Session 1 of 2) will be held from 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm at the Harris County Department of Education, 6515 Irvington, Houston, 77022. January 15 & 16, 2010: Multi-Regional ESOL Reading Institute will be held from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm on both days at the Harris County Department of Education, 626 Lindale Blvd., Houston, 77022. Nationally known researchers Dr. Heide Spruck Wrigley and Jim Powrie will facilitate this Institute. The Institute is designed for experienced teachers and will focus on research to practice in teaching reading to second language readers with a special focus on comprehension strategies for beginning and intermediate level learners. Participants will explore the types of learning experiences that are most likely to promote reading proficiency and will make connections between the ideas presented in the workshop and their own practice.
The initial two-day session is open to all teachers. Teachers who are interested in more in-depth knowledge about teaching reading to ESOL adult learners may apply to receive a stipend through an extension of this initial two-day Academy. Presenter is Audrey Nelson-Ricks. Financial education fosters financial stability for individuals, families, and entire communities. The more people know about credit and banking services, the more likely they are to increase savings, buy homes, and improve their financial health and well being. The Money Smart curriculum helps individuals build financial knowledge, develop financial confidence, and use banking services effectively. Money Smart was created by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) because it recognizes the importance of financial education, particularly for people with little or no banking experience. January 20, 2010: Webcast - Achieving Student Success: Transitions to Post-secondary Education. National Institute for Literacy will host this Webcast at noon Central Time. In this Webcast, designed for program administrators, experts will explore successful student transitions as well as discuss current research, state office technical assistance, and adult education program perspectives. Participants will learn what local programs, in partnership with colleges, are doing to ensure that students are ready to move from adult literacy classes to post-secondary education and beyond. January 21 - 22, 2010: Evidence-Based Approaches for Serving the Learning Disabled Adult will be held at Austin Community College, Highland Business Center, 5930 Middle Fiskville Rd., Austin 78752 on Thursday from 8:00am - 5:00pm and Friday from 8:00am - 4:00pm. The literacy collaboration of Literacy Texas, Literacy Coalition of Central Texas, and the Literacy Volunteer Training Initiative of TCALL is bringing the training to Austin. This is an in-depth workshop that focuses on equipping adult education programs and their partners to meet the challenges of adults with learning disabilities. The training covers legal issues, assessment, diagnosis, goal setting, case management/teaching methods, and much more. Each participant will earn a certificate of completion. January 21 - 22, 2010: STAR Reading Statewide Training Institute #1. This first of three Institutes will be hosted by Harris County DOE Adult Education at their Irvington Learning Center. Institutes #2 and #3 will be held at the same location on February 26-27, 2010 and April 9-10, 2010 respectively. Participants must attend all three of the two-day Institutes.
